Re: Most obsessed
Last year the night before the scrimage I we were doing finnal practice before and doing backing when a gear sheared off the robot. It was like ten at night. So what I did ws run home and get it welded. On the way home i got pulled over for running a red light
. We I didnt get a ticket for that. S i got home and got it welded and we had that robot running that night. |

Re: Most obsessed
Well the night we were packing for our regional we realized...Uuuuh oh..No trailer
So a few of us went and dug our captains trailer out of the snow at about 11 at night, then brought it to the shop and spent the next 4 hours getting stuff together and packed away nicely for the competition...made it home at 3:30am, that's what we like to call commitment ![]() |

Re: Most obsessed
Heres a good one: in 2003, my senior year in highschool, our team was extrememly limited on things that we could use to make our robot. that, mixed in with a few other unforseeable obstacles, led us to only have 1 and a half of our tank treads done.. no chasis, no electronics, no appendage or anything else. The last week we were blessed with a machine shop and unlimited time in it. needless to say the final build week myself and a few others spent about 110 hours in the shop
. we went directly from school to the machine shop, left at about 3 or 4 in the morning, got about 2 hours of sleep and then repeated the cycle. we got it all done, even with about 4 hours to practice driving. |

Re: Most obsessed
In 2003, the robot had to shipped in a few hours. We just finish getting all of the arms and such on the robot and had it up and running. Then someone had the genius idea of weighing the robot. We get the scale and the robot is .5 lbs under weight, but just one problem we forgot to weigh the battery. So its 3:00 am the robot is overweight and fedex is coming at 9:00am. Me and a few others stay in the shop taking all of the arm systems off the robot that we had spent all day putting on and got the robot to proper weight. Its hard spending weeks and weeks designing and building an arm and have to take it off before it is even used. It took all day to put it together but only took 2 hours to take it apart. Needless to say we have learned our lesson, but this year the battery is already taking care of. . .

Re: Most obsessed
a great deal of my wardrobe is pink (when i do laundry, i divide it into jeans, whites, color, and PINK) lol my room is painted pink, i wear a bright pink bikini at competitions and run around with pink body paint on, i paint every willing guy and girl's nails pink for competition, i'm dying my hair pink for Nationals (our scout leader has pink hair and so does our human player, and at nat'ls there will be even more people with pink hair), i lose my voice at competitions screaming cheers, and i spent countless hours during the build season creating trading cards, working on chairman's award submission, going out to KSC to help out in whichever way possible, sacrificing free time, sleeping in on weekends, and valuable sleeping time to work on various projects like graphic design and sorting through massive amounts of pictures.
even at the end of the build period every year during crunch time i have a slight panic attack when i realize all of the things that still have to get done for both robotics and school and the fact that it doesnt appear that i have the time to do both while getting some sleep as well... but i love it and wouldnt have it any other way. ![]() Edit: not to mention how much time i spend here on Chief Delphi while i could be doing something "important" like Homework or sleep! I've seen the shop clock say 3 or 4 AM a few times. I've also subjected myself to a rediculous travel schedule for FIRST. I had a test in Boston on a Friday at 3 PM and taken a bus back to New York, then a train back to Long Island, arriving home at 1 AM, going to sleep at 2:30 AM and getting up at 6 AM for the last day of SBPLI. |

Re: Most obsessed
Can I nominate someone other than myself?
I don't know if I'd called it "obsessed," but definitely crazy, insane, dedicated, and ballsy. Team 1241 - Theory6 was part of the winning alliance at Waterloo. As the elimination rounds progressed, their role became a 100% defensive one. Problem was, they were actually an offensive robot - decent arm, and they could score tetras. It's just that they had an incredibly powerful drivetrain, which rocked at playing defense, and the alliance had decided playing defense was the best way to help the alliance. So they converted their machine into a defensive juggernaut. Their arm was just asking to be damaged while playing defense, plus it was a tipping hazard for both themselves, and any robots they wanted to push. So they took it off... but I don't mean they unbolted their arm and removed it from the chassis. Their arm was WELDED to the chassis. THEY CUT THEIR ARM CLEAN OFF!!! Come on people! These guys KNEW they were competing again in FIVE days at the GTR, and they fully expect to re-weld the arm on there, but geez. I would have a heart attack if anyone took a saw to our robot, and hacked off the top 4 feet of it... WOW... just WOW. FYI, this was no chump-change arm either. This is arguably one of the nicest arms in all of FIRST. -SlimBoJones... |

Re: Most obsessed
I probably clocked the most hours in our machine shop making parts for our robot this season...and I'm a rookie
I do FIRST stuff before Homework (I had a 4 day weekend that I spent mainly working on the robot..I did homework at 12 am before school the next day, lol. I spend a lot of time on Chief Delphi or other FIRST websites...which seem to distract me from uhh, more important things...like homework I should be doing. ![]() I love robotics...I was sad to part with our robot at regionals for such a long period until nationals...and since i couldn't take it home with me, i took the next best thing, the Operator Interface...its hanging off my wall right now. ![]() |
