Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

Team 1006's mascot is a giant sprocket holding a welding torch. His name is "Torch". The mascot costume is massive and a little hurtin' right now and no one seems to know what it is. LOL

Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

The best part about mascots is how much fun they are, in Sacramento, while we waited for the next finals match, we were dancing to something, maybe the Macarana, anyway, the giant hat was on the field, as spirited as ever, and all the sudden the pirate sprinted across the field and tackled him! The whole stadium erupted in laughter, I think they pre-planned it though, because the FIRST guy who grabbed the pirate let him go after he told him something...? It was still really funny to watch. Mascots are some of the most amazing people and we need to appreciate the person (who must be frying!) behind the mask.

Oh man you guys who haven't done the mascot have no idea how hot it can get in those suits. Speaking from experience i must say that is the hottest i have ever been in my life. We had to put in another little muffin fan in the head beacuse one didnt work and let me tell you it didnt do that much. So much kudos to the mascots with the thick foam heads and the suits that are impermeable to anything but more heat

Especially the dancing ones that have nothing but spirit.

Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

Our team mascot is a Terrier, that is the mascot of our school.

We also carry around our huge wrench, hence our team motto:

"Speak softly and carry a big wrench"

Most of the teams at BAE or Chesapeake know us by carrying that wrench around.

You got that right! Not too long ago I replaced the dinky little muffin fan that was in the dog head with one of those big fans from the kit. The big fan is very, very effective when trying to keep you cool and comfortable in the suit. Watch where you stick your hand though, the fan is located in the mouth (don't worry, it doesn't hurt, it just scares you)... I scared a few of my friends that way . The big fan is powered by a switch and a huge 6 volt battery that is located in my pocket during mascot performances.

I have also never perspired so much before I went into that mascot suit. It is terribly hot in those things, and stinky too if you don't take good care of the outfit.

I'll try to post a picture of the dog head with the big fan inside of it to give you all an idea of how I can survive wearing that suit all day .

Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

you have to love the hat, any one remember when the hat kicked the 1097 mascot in the balls at SVR like 3 yrs ago( they were not trying to) but it was funny. but i agree that mascots really make the comps a lot more fun, and a good mascot can really lift up team spirit

True, much kudos to the mascots (and five bonus kudos to you Andrew). The few times I put that head on it was blazing inside, and the Axe didn't cover the smell of sweat from the last two or three dozen people to wear it. I think though that if we reverse the flow of the fan so that its blowing down over your head, it would be much more comfortable. I'm still not going to wear it though. Leave that to you and Pelan.

Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

Yes, indeed I have a newfound respect for all mascots, as I had the priviledge to wear the bobcat during one match at Philly. It was hot and hard to see, which made me appreciate Andrew's Cotton Eyed Joe even more. Funny story though:

After the match, I went to the 7-11 near the venure in the suit with some of my friends on the team, and after getting a ton of weird looks, the manager of the 7-11 told me to take off the head. I think he expected me to start robbing him at gunpoint at any moment. It was like something out of trigger-happy tv .

The costume was made by one of the parents back in the team's first year. It's not exactly in good shape anymore, though, and there's been talk of retiring it or getting a new mascot entirely.

I think that's a shame - having something unique is nice - but since I'm a senior and I can't be involved next year because of distance issues, it's not really my area to say anything.

Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

I have fond memories of wearing the original MOE Uppet around nationals in 2001. It was funny to me at the time that our mentors kept telling me to take it off [We built it off/up a backpack frame] and have something to drink in the shade... [which i didn't] But i was probably the most hydrated one there since i filled up my water bottle ~5 times a day. By the time i finally agreed to take it off and sit down to have a powerade, they wanted me/the mascot over with lil'moe for the Good Morning America shoot.

Top Ten Things I Remember as the Mascot
10- 5 years later, you will still be finding new pictures of yourself online.
9-If you are wearing a heavy 9' tall mascot... trying to jumprope [w/ a 10' rope] is impossible [Amusing though... I think i provided quite a laugh for the Leopards.]
8-A full page of detailed size 12 font uppet assembly directions are not enough for someone with no experience to assemble the Uppet.
7-Drink lots of water, even if you are not thirsty, it significantly reduces the number of "you should go get something to drink"s that you get.
6-If the mascot is built by an "artiste" it will invariabley be heavy as heck because they usually use thicker PVC than needed for the job, along with steel straightners to prevent twisting/loss of mascot arms.
5-If the costume shows your face, people will recognize you for years to come. [Someone recognized me crewing in Philly last week... as the 2001 mascot]
4-If the boys who took turns wearing it at the regionals complain about it being heavy, and refuse to wear it for long periods of time... don't expect that to change at The Championships... A girl [me] ended up wearing it for three days straight in the Florida Heat/Sun and refused to take it off.
3-You can sunburn in the most unusual places. [I managed to burn a 4 inch strip across the back of my knees... and nowhere else. Turbulance on flight home was especially fun.]
2-Have a large stash of barter items... My bag was not very big, so i had to get lots of refills. I probably went through more holograms and MOEmints [who wants some melted chocolate!!!] than anyone else on the team. [2 drawers full of buttons & stuff when i got home.]
1-When wearing a tall mascot... with wide dryerhose shoulders... it is really fun getting through doorways.

As soon as we figure out what a "Cyber Blue' looks like, we're gonna build one awesome mascos costume.

Until then, it's the Scott head....

Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

If you are going to be at West Michigan this weekend, you may catch a sighting of Team 862, Lighting Robotics, new mascot: Gigawatt!

He's a crafty devil though, this is a picture of his only known sighting so far.

I'm happy not to BE the mascot...but at UCF one person in one of our mascot costumes hurt himself. I think he twisted his ankle while walking on stilts. He was better a few hours later, but still...I respect those people who can dress up like that...

Re: Mascot Anti-Defamation League

I was the team mascot for Team 686. I was in a cow costume, udders and all. Do you know how many jokes I had to put up with? I had guts, thats for sure. The freshman that originally volunteered for it chickened out. So i figured, it was my senior year, why not do it.
