Hairline Fractures

For those who chat with me online on a regualr basis, you know I have had serious issues with my right foot recently. I don't have a doctor's appointment til tomorrow, so in the meantime, I'd like to ask those who have been injured as such (athletic injuries, not sprains) share their stories. Particularly how you could tell it was a fracture.

I had a very small fracture of my left middle finger once, while playing basketball.

I didn't know it was fractured until they took multiple X-rays.

It hurt like heck when it wasn't all taped up, that's for sure.

I was rock climbing and fell about 10 feet-15 feet and landed between two rocks and then lost balance and fell over. I chipped my bone in my ankle, hyper extended the ligament, tore it half way through and then fractured my ankle an inch higher then where I chipped the bone. I knew It was hurt when i herd the POP sound, but I dint know how bad until I had to walk the long long distance back to the car on my ankle.

I broke my arm on a trampoline in 2002. I knew it was broken when I heard the loud SNAP!

Wow, you guys are in some major pain. Mine is more of an ongoing pain, and has major bruising and a major limp attached to it. Now, I could pull a Wetzel (with all due respect) and be on crutches, or I could hope nothing is wrong and it'll go away. I'm just very concerned that it will stay that way and cause problems, especially with the amount of walking I'll have to do in ATL. It gets worse the more stress I put on it, so I've been steering clear of heavy work.

When I was much younger I was playing catch with a few buddies on the street. I tripped over the curb and hurt my foot. Against my wishes my buddies dad took me to the hospital. Broken foot. They applied a big cast to almost my knee and sent me home. Problem was I had a first date that night with a girl I really liked. I sent my dad to pick her up and then he drove me to the concert. After we walked down Yonge street and I nearly froze my toes off. Had to call dad again to pick us up. Slightly embarrassing but well worth it.

BTW she did go out with me again, without my dad.

Take care of it now cause I still feel all of my old aches at my advanced age.

I fractured my thumb (actually, one of my friends fractured my thumb, I still occasionaly give him a hard time about it) at the senior all night party two years ago. I didn't notice anything was wrong until I went to zip up my backpack about four hours later and I couldn't use my thumb. And then the next day it was hugely swollen, but I didn't have time to go to the doctor for two days after that. I couldn't move it at all, but it didn't really hurt except for when I applied force. It took forever to be able to shuffle cards again though.

I have had two hairline fractures on my right wrist on separate occasions, both from snowboarding, for some reason I don't think that I should snowboard anymore.

i once shattered the growthplate in my ankle playing......kickball.... (i will let everyone a)either ask me themselves or b) laugh at that all by itself )

Not sports related, but I broke my left arm when I was in kindergarten. I was at the playground down the street from my house when I thought it was be smart to go down the slide head first. Well, for one reason or another (I can't really remember) I got about half way down the slide and then i "rolled" off the edge and landed on my stomach with my left arm underneath me. I do remember hearing a snapping noise and then realizing that I couldn't feel or move my left arm at all from it's position resting across my body. I managed to get back home and off to the hospital I went. I dont really remember anything about the hospital visit but I was in a cast for awhile with my arm in the same position as it had been when I landed on it. Due to multiple breaks my arm never did regain it's full length after it healed. To this day I still can not touch my shoulder with my left arm (it's about an inch off). I guess the only downside is when I played "Simon Says" because I could never touch my shoulder.

In my younger years, while swinging on a swing; I was being stupid...

I was trying to jump off the swing and I had released my hands from the chains, in preparation for the jump.

Once the swing was at the peak of its back swing, I immediately fell face first into the ground.

While skydiving to the ground probably 6+ feet to the ground, I immediately put my hands at full extension to prevent my face from becoming injured and in return I got injured wrists.

Lucky or not so luckily, my chin barely hit the ground and I got up in the worst pain I have ever felt.

I knew something was broken or severely sprained.

After wards I went in the house barely able to open the door knob, plopped on the couch, and hardly moved an inch because of the pain.

One single movement of both of my hands added a sharp pain to the corresponding hand and of course this pain added onto the pain without the movement.

So, I sat around the house for a while in severe pain, when my mom saw me she could tell something was not right.

So I told her what I had done and she eventually took me to the ER.
(I am not a person that complains much, and it took my days to go the the hospital after one previous foot injury)

To end the story short after waiting in the Emergency Room for many many painful hours, I finally got in the X-Ray room and ended up getting a cast on one arm and a wrist brace on the other.

They were both broken (ouch).

Moral of the story:

(1) Don't jump off swings.

(2) The worst pain you probably ever have in a limb/limb's or other extremity's probably means it is broken...

My Other Broken Bone

This broken bone is more like your injuries.

Once while playing four-square, with boots on, don't ask why because I do not know; I landed toes first on my right foot.

It hurt, but not all that bad.

Eventually after four days in pain, I finally said to my mom that I need to get my foot checked out.

I found out after those four days that two of my toes were fractured.

The hospital ended up giving me a toe/foot boot to wear around for several weeks or so.

How did I know something was broken?

Waiting four days in pain to realize that it was not a sprain or something that was not going to heal on its own.

Seriously, I instantly thought of this once I read 'hairline' fractures.

I have been lucky enough to never break anything, but my brother had one in his wrist when he was tackled by a huge kid while playing little league baseball. Sigh.

One day I got the brilliant idea to ride a scooter down a wet driveway. Well, it slipped and the handlebars went into my ribs. I was only a little bruised, or so I thought. A few days the small bruise type pain was still there, but the bruising was gone. Also, now every time I took a deep breath, it hurt a lot. So I went to the doctor. They took an X ray but said everthing was fine and the pain should go away in a few days. Well, a few days came and went. Then it really started hurting to take any sort of deep breath whatsoever. So then like two weeks after I went to the doctor I get a letter in the mail saying they reviewed the X-rays again and I have a cracked rib (hariline fracture). No wonder I couldn't take deep breaths without hurting myself. There was nothing to do to fix it except relax and wait. So, I couldn't participate in PE for like 3 weeks and I got an F on my report card, the only one ever. But I brought it back up to an A by writing five 2 page reports on different sports.

Fractures:

Left wrist: roller-skating in jr. high
Right hand: football in 9th grade
Left hand: football in 11th grade
Right thumb: wrestling in 11th grade, same day that the cast from "left hand" came off - doc hit me over the head with clipboard for this one

Muscle tear:
Right pectoral: 80% tear, lifting weights, about 10 years ago. It sounded like a burlap bag ripping. Ouch. This was the final move that made me switch from jockdom to geekdom.

By their nature, hairline fractures are really hard to dx. Unless you get the right xrays, it is easy to miss. This is really the only way to say one way or another about a hairline fracture.

As for my toe, nothing broke. I've never broken any bone at anytime, but this is my first dislocation. I'm going to link to a picture, but be warned: You can see the middle phalange of toe III sticking out of the skin. It was interesting, the ortho docs had to talk for a minute to figure out the name of the joint, because it is apparently an oddball one. The distal interphalangeal joint on phalange III, DIP-III.
Dislocated toe. Blood and bone. Of course, Brandon may remove it.
