The long stretch between seasons.....

What do you guys do to keep busy over the "offseason". I find myself drawing up new ideas for what would have been cool in the last year's game. I also watch some soap vid's and do some team related stuff. Am I the only one?

In no order of importance
  1. Start new teams!
  2. Offseason competitions
  3. Play with our extra (accidentally :-/) IFI controller
  4. Think of new base designs
  5. Help rookie teams!
  6. Run an offseason
  7. Build your own team closer
  8. Spend time with FIRST friends met and get your region closer together
  9. Find a new FIRST team (for us traveling seniors :-/)
  10. Help a prospective rookie modify your old robot for an offseason competition
  11. Save up to buy a vex kit
  12. Buy a vex kit
  13. Play with said Vex kit
  14. start a Vex team
  15. Play with LEGOs
  16. Watch Star Wars Episode 3
  17. Start to feel old as you make FIRST jokes that rookies don't get
  18. Combine all the good robots you saw to make the uber robot
  19. Help rookie teams some more
  20. Join a national rookie helping program soon to come out of the dark called RINOS
  21. Help a rookie already!

Just ya know... some things off the top of my head.

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....

we're doing fundraisers planning for next year, and compiling some good video clips onto one dvd to archive the year. We'll have to find some more things, though (which I know won't be hard) 'cause its a looong time until January!

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....

Well I am going to take a few months off to travel after graduation, then in the summer my team and I are mentoring a small robotics summer camp. Then do some more traveling. Then when grade school starts up again I will help out in training new members and do some research and development to introduce new concepts to the team. Last year we R&D arm systems and programming. This year we will R&D drive systems and manufacturing. The R&D will take us pretty much through January in which the whole process starts over.

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....

The best thing you can do in terms of robot is to get every member of your team to learn inventor. And not just the tutorials. I would do a summer Inventor project of building a new robot to play Triple Play now that you actually know how it is played. I'm talking every detail. Also, you should make inventor models of different chassis, transmission, and arm ideas that you might be able to use no matter what the game is. Even if you end up not using them, the expertise you gain puts you far ahead.

This year, we would not have been able to do a 6 motor 2 speed transmission if we had not started thinking about it and drawing it up in the pre-season.

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....

Gaaah, the list of things my team wants to get done before next year is overwhelming and relieving at the same time...I won't have to wait until next season to be around it, but I'm afraid my mom might take away my computer and lock me in my room so I'll go to sleep and stop thinking about robotics for a while...

(I'd probably come up with something robotics-related to occupy the time...)

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....

During the 8 months in between the end of this season and the next, i plan to get more sleep. Other then that, we have a lot of fundraising that needs to be done which can be a pain in the butt. During the summer, im hoping we attend the IRI but nothing is set in stone yet. Also after summer is over i want to start a rough outline of a scouting plan. I wanted to do one this year but didnt have enough time.

Get ready for the BEST robotics competition in the fall It is a smaller scale event compared to FIRST but it is a great way to get new students experience in robotic competitions.
