Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

Team 818 first competed in the 2002 season.

This year, we're losing all of the seniors who joined as freshmen. If I counted right, we've got a total of eighteen seniors (including myself) who are leaving this year, including our main driver, strategist, and more than a few subteam leads.

But we're a huge team. I don't think that any of the seniors are going to be irreplaceable - we've all been working with younger students and they should be ready to step up and fill the holes we've got now. I know that some of the seniors are planning on mentoring next year, while others (like me) are going to be leaving forever because of distance.

It's a big loss, but we should be able to survive it.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

Team 135 is osing every student member of its team. We are very unique and we have a new team of students every year, 22 this past year, 19 new students next year. Our team may have been in FIRST for 8 years, but every student is a rookie. Just because we are always rookies don't count us down. We work all year long and we are always a solid group of students. Every year we have rookie drivers, pit and everything. I think it shows the true skills of our mentors and the dedication our students have to the program and to FIRST.

My team, 95, is losing much of it's core: 2 operators, drive coach, mechanical lead, electrical lead, machining lead, pit crew chief, scout lead.... it's crazy!

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

Our team is lossing 95% of its Strength. So far there are only 4 people left behind. But thats the way it is. I think of it as part of FIRST CHALLENGE. As a team leader for next year, i know that we are going to have less resources and less light bulbs (brains). So me and the left over (otehr members) are already planning new ways to recruit new members and make our team stronger for upcoming years. This time, we are not only targetting high school students, but also planning to target the nearby Middle School for FLL, so that those students will be pumped up for FRC.
Yes it's a disadvantage for most of the teams, that our seniors are leaving, but thast the way it is. Its a complete cycle. Seniors will help the nearby teams as mentors though. Two of my friends, going to Cornell and Mason are plannign to help the nearby teams as mentors. And on the same hand, middle schoolers will provide rookie members every year.
So, don't worry, take it as a Challenge given by Dean and Woodie.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

Team 1626 only will be losing one senior. He pretty much taught us how to program, and just helped us, he let the sophomores run the team. All that remains as of right now is 5 Sophomores going to be juniors, and about 4 freshmen going to be Sophomores. 1626 is set for at least 2 more years. We'll have our "core" guaranteed for these next two years, and hope there will be new members to pass our knowledge on to.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

im a junior now, this was our second year in FIRST
we only have 1 senior now, but next year, tha Class of 06 will be leaving and taking about 75% of the team with it
It's gonna be tough for tha younger kids
I suggest training them in building, programming and leadership during sophmore year so you have a predecessor
Either way, i'm cutting college for 6 weeks to go back to high school for the build as a mentor

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

Our team has 32 members and we will be losing 10 of the hardest working seniors we have ever had. They have showed us how to be great workers, and team members with what they have showed us i belive our team will still be as strong as ever.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

1123 is losing a ton of seniors this year, and all but 1 or 2 of the remaining members have only been on for one year. It's really bad. Our programming team next year may consist entirely of one freshman who has not had a programming course yet. Fortunately he's been involved for a couple years and has picked up some skills while helping out during programming meetings.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

we kinda get the rough end.... at hills road there is only 2 years of students (your seniors and juniors). We thus lose half the team every year. eg i will be going to uni this year after only 2 years on the team....
1542 are ok as tehy have our type of school with the school below incorporated ...

Team 1108 is losing 7 seniors out of 23 kids. It is really hard for us because they were the absolute heart of our team. They are the people who were here our team's rookie year, so now it is up to all the newer people to keep it going. I'm sure they'll be coming back to visit though, I know they won't be able to keep away. *lots of love to all seniors*

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

Cyber Blue is losing about 13 of 35 students because of graduation. After doing this for several years I've come to learn that even though you think some people aren't replacable or it will be impossible to fill their shoes, our kids always come through and step it up. Hopefully my class can do the same next year since we'll be the seniors and team leaders.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors

Our team is also losing a lot of seniors. However, losing a third of the team as seniors is normal, because:
Poeple who join FIRST usually stay on, so there should be seniors>Juniors>Sophmores>Freshman At a constant team size.
Also the loss is noticible because Seniors put in the most work, and the most time into the work. This makes them seem irreplacable, when in fact their underdog junior (who nobody notices) is probably almost as good.

Don't worry, replacements are coming in, and they are YOU!
