32DP 19T 20PA Pinion Wire

Does anyone know where to get steel 32DP 19T 20PA drawn pinion wire? Stock Drive Products has brass 14 1/2PA only. Their catalog (see attached) seems to skip just what I need. I need the equivalent of SDP catalog number "A 1C 9-Y32019" but it does not seem to exist. Does anyone know where else I could find such a beast if it exists or how to get it custom made and about how much it should cost if custom made?

Thanks,
Chuck

Re: 32DP 19T 20PA Pinion Wire

Sorry, I don't have a good source for buying them COT, but you an always have a gear burned via wire EDM. It should be roughly $50 to have a gear cut depending on the material and how busy the source is. As to sources for either cutting the gears or wire burning them, Detroit has 100's of them. If you can't find one in your area, give me a PM.

By the way, trying to find a 19T gear for you, I came across THIS file from Boston Gear that I think has a pretty good intro to gear terminology.

Check it out.

Re: 32DP 19T 20PA Pinion Wire

I checked McMaster, MSC, Small Parts, PIC, Berg, Boston, and a couple others and nobody seems to have what you want. The only thing close is a 1/8" face gear, and I'm assuming you want wider hence the need for the long length.

There's a free DOS program called Geargen which will make you a dxf of a gear that is supposedly good enough to burn it from.

Let us know what exactly you are trying to do, and maybe we can figure out some sort of alternative.

Re: 32DP 19T 20PA Pinion Wire

Thanks for the info and trying to find what I am looking for. I checked all the same places with no luck. I have a query in with Grob (www.grobinc.com) and W. M. Berg to see if it is available. Berg doesn't list it in the catalog but they have 18T and 20T and say that other sizes are available (see attachment). I have my fingers crossed.

Burn it locally? Yeah, right. We are in a small town in Mississippi and I bet there aren't more than a handful of people here who even know what EDM is. If I can't find it to order I will have to find some way to order it custom. Would this be FIRST legal? I assume so since any other team could do the same.

I did find the 1/8" face width spur gears at SDP but need something a little wider like 3/8". I am looking for pinion wire because it is usually much cheaper than spur gears and I can make whatever face width I want.

What am I doing? Hmm, it's top secret! Just kidding. I am dinking around with some gearbox design stuff. I am not very far along yet but have some ideas in my head that I want to try. I have everything figured out (in my head anyway) but have run into a snag finding this 32DP 19T 20PA pinion. If it works out I hope to put out a white paper before next season starts.

If anyone finds a source please let me know. I am still looking!

Thanks again,
Chuck

Re: 32DP 19T 20PA Pinion Wire

If you want GearGen, it's available (as shareware, presumably, despite its age) here. Geargen makes some segmented polylines in the .dxf output, but we couldn't get it to work with the ancient EDM (and its equally ancient computer, and ancient CAM software) that we tried it on.

I thought I ran across some strange stuff somewhere. I'm not certain it's actually stocked, but they're probably set up to get it out quickly, what with the name and all.... Rush Gears, Inc.

Thanks Kevin! It looks like Rush catalog # PW203219 is exactly what I am looking for. I had found Rush on GlobalSpec but couldn't find any info on their site on the pinion wire they carry. I have tried several times to download their 7mb PDF catalog but my computer seems to have a problem with it. I have put in a RFQ with Rush. I hope they can solve my quest! Since I can't seem to see the full PDF catalog do you know what length of pinion wire they offer? I don't see anything about length in the PDF section you attached.

Thanks again,
Chuck

Man, you are good. Rush's website is horrible though. Did you have to register to get that catalog? Or is there some link that I'm missing where everyone can get the (online) catalog without registering?

I registered and still can't seem to get the catalog to download correctly. Maybe I will try again tomorrow on another machine at work and see if it is just something on my laptop.

Re: 32DP 19T 20PA Pinion Wire

Rush Gears is a great company but I have never had a case where they were not many times more expensive than wire burning a gear. Their specialty is cutting gears FAST.

The only time I use them is when I HAVE to have the gear fast (for the right amount of money -- say $2K/gear or so -- they can cut a gear the same day and have it on your dock the next) OR if I HAVE to have the gear cut for quality reasons or because of the type of gear cannot be burned.

If you are designing this from scratch, perhaps you can redesign it to use an 18 or 20T gear?

As to EDM sources, I have been and remain happy with Lou Oudin at Capital Tool & Die -- read the whitepaper on NBD -- link below -- for his contact info.
