War of the Worlds is getting amazing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes but I am a bit disturbed by the universal groan about an apparently awful ending.

I'm trying to avoid reading much about it as I want to be completely involved in the movie rather than waiting for this or that part I read about in a review.

The ending, of course, is going to be the hardest part to make work here -- everyone knows how the novel ends. If Spielberg stays true to the novel, there's no suspense because we all know what happens, but if he tries to change things, he takes on the immense task of doing better than Wells himself and that's a big job to tackle.
