Girls FIRST vs. RCU?

As a recent "join-ee" of the RCU, I have been hearing a lot about another organization. This organization goes by the name Girls FIRST, however I have been able to find little to no information on it. All I have been able to encounter is hearsay information saying that these two organizations are essentially the same.

Can anyone provide greater insight into what exactly Girls FIRST is?

I have not heard of Girls First, but an organization called Girls Inc. was invited to IRI. The chapter from Girls Inc. of Indianapolis had a booth at IRI and was handing out information on Friday.

Is this the group you are referring to? If so, I would assume that these two groups (RCU & Girls Inc.) could help each other out. Even if there is a "Girls FIRST" group out there, solely focused on female involvement in FIRST, I would assume that RCU and Girls FIRST would be excited to help each other out.

Re: Girls FIRST vs. RCU?

Andy,

Yes, I have also heard of Girls Inc. however it is not the organization that I am looking for more information on, though I should probably read up more on it also. The group that I am looking for more info on is called Girls FIRST. Thanks though!

Re: Girls FIRST vs. RCU?

A Google search brought up this link, but my computer is mean, so I don't know if it's broken or if my computer is just harassing it.

there is an organization called Girls FIRST but I myself don't know that much. All i know is that they are trying to promote girls involvement in FIRST and I believe they have a few programs in the works.

Re: Girls FIRST vs. RCU?

About 33% of FLL participants are girls and about 27% of FRC participants are girls. According to the Chief Operating Officer of Girls Inc, those numbers are good, but FIRST would like to improve them.

Girls FIRST is an initiative within HQ that is working on addressing the needs of girls already involved in FIRST while trying to recruit more girls. The Girls
FIRST Advisory Committee was formed in August, 2004 and includes
representatives from NASA, Girls Inc, FIRST, FRC teams, FLL teams, the NH
Commission on the Status of Women (every state has such a Commission) as
well as judges for FIRST. Girls FIRST is currently working on building
solid partnerships, developing programs for girls in conjunction with Girls
Inc. and the Girl Scouts, and has been piloting girls-only programs in the
state of New Hampshire.

If you are interested in getting involved, PM me and I will give you more info.

Sorry for the confusion! There are so many organizations out there all trying to achieve the same things…it is about time we all start working together
