A few questions

I still have a few questions about FIRST that I want to ask before I'm no longer a rookie. I don't want to wait too long to ask and look dumb.

I'm a little confused, is the Championship event held in a different place every year or every few years? When is the location announced? When are the dates usually announced? Is Kickoff the same date every year? Other than Dean, Woodie, and Dave, what famous FIRSTers should I know?

That's all for now, I'll probably add a few more questions when I think of them.

Re: A few questions

The championship is going to be at Atlanta, Georgia for a while (i think until 2007?). It used to be in different places in previous years (epcot in 2002, texas in 2003).
When the location is announced, I don't think there's an official date. Usually someone on CD will post it; the usfirst.org site will have it as well.

Kickoff, traditionally, is always the first saturday of january. The actual number of the date will vary by year.

Other FIRST'ers? Maybe Paul Copioli, Andy Baker, John v-neun, ken leung... I can't remember anymore at the moment, my brain is tired.

The championship event was held in Disney in 2002, 2003 it was held in Huoston, 2004 and 2005 it was help in Atlanta. Yes championship has been held in different venues through out the year. The location is usually decided and announced in the fall (august-october). Kickoff is usually the first saturday of January (the day we all wait for). Coming up season's kickoff will be January 7th, 2005. You should get to know as many mentors as possible in FIRST, cause you will gain a lot of knowledge from them.

if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Great questions, it takes a little time for everyone to learn the ropes. Theres a rather nifty list on FirstWiki, indexing SOME, not all of Woodie Flowers award winners and Unsung FIRST Heros award. As well as other Cool people. So check out the list of celebreties

Also, this isn't by far the most politically correct way of doing this but, if you sort the CD members page by reputation. Anyone on the Top Page with the most reputation is definetly a cool person to meet. Theres a bunch of Students, Engineers, Mentors, and Legends that are more than worthy of meeting. And if you ever meet any of them, thank them, they've all done something postitive and productive for the entire community.

Don't do that. You might surprise yourself. There are many very cool people with relatively low reputation and some others with high reputations that I wouldn't have any desire to meet.

It's not a rumor. It's between Indy and Atlanta.
As far as which one is picked, it should be decided soon. It will be held in Atlanta for 2006, and the few years after, will either be Atlanta again, or Indy. It seems they are trending to make contracts last a few years in one location, as it takes an awful lot to organize the event somewhere.

As for people, I would suggest getting to know as many people as you can, and as you frequent the forums you'll find yourself wanting to meet many....

Welcome to FIRST! It's in your blood now...

For once, I agree with you... there are a lot of mentors out there who doesn't post here as much or can't be seen around the forums often.

... to make it easy for you Chase, meet everyone possible in FIRST, thats the way to go. Back in my sophomore year, I started getting into the community of FIRST. I know more than 300 people (Students and Mentors) now (thats the least). Some of them became really good friends of mine. Make friends in FIRST, I promise you won't regret it.

To be quite honest, since I've been in FIRST since 2003, I haven't met one person that I could say it was undesirable meeting them. Since I joined my robotics teams, I've aquired many friends, whether it be other students, or other team's mentors. Just because you would have no desire to meet them does not mean another person would feel the same. Once again, your just posting an opinion, and it probably does not apply for everyone.

Let me post another. My opinion is that there isn't any problem in posting opionions.

Anyway, you are probably correct in saying it wouldn't apply across the board, but I just wanted to point out that reputation should be one of the lest deciding factors in "picking out" someone to meet.

Never said there was a problem with posting opinions. But in MY opinion, you direct quite a few of your opinions accross the board, and THAT right there is the problem.
