Re: hurricane season 05

wow, has anyone else noticed how the whole earth is having weird weather. I mean its not only places like US, but Durham region, and Markham (next to toronto) had floods, and heavy winds...(it's pretty uncommon here, I dont think that we've had floods here)

also, while I was in Mumbai (aka Bombay, India), it was monsoon season. that means that there is the occational small flood....this time it poured about 1 metre in a day! that set a new world record. Luckily for me, my friends and family didn't get affected much in that flood, except my cousin, who decided to walk through that for about 5 hours(getting home from college) but he's safe...but, LOT of people died though, and now there's lots of water-bourne diseases getting people, and killing people too. It's really sad if you think about all the helpless people dying from drowning, and diseases.

These are just a couple of examples of the odd weather going on around the globe, theres probably a lot more going on that I don't know about.

Re: hurricane season 05

I talked to my parents on friday afternoon, eye went right over our house. He said that no one in the neighborhood was prepared becuase all the tv/paper/hurricane center said that it wouldnt be much of a storm. The power was still out and had been since 4pm on thursday. We fared well but friends further south lost thier roof and have a foot of water in thier house.

175 mph winds with dropping pressure. I believe that speaks for itself.

For those in the New Orleans area and/or others in the path of this storm, stay safe and get out before its too late. Good luck.

Just a headup to everyone.... please be prepared forehand. You are not going to like it when you don't have any supplies after the hurricane makes all it's damages. I am a victim and I know how it feels like. Put shutters up now, if possible get a backup generator for your house. It really helps.

Our prayers are with you.

Re: hurricane season 05

Yes this hurricane is huge. Hurricane Andrew (which i was in when i was 4) was only 140 mph -- and this is 175 mph -- no joke. we have damage all over our complex due to the tropical storm winds ... about 1/9 of what it is now. well maybe a bit stronger.

Please everyone take care and prepare. Batteries, generators, WATER, radios, edible food, charge your phones -- don't overlook anything. i'm wondering what New Orleans is going to do -- the city's below sea level as it is.

Our prayers ARE with you --

Re: hurricane season 05

I totally second Neha's comments. Though I have never been in a hurricane myself, I know the damage and devastation that they can cause. President Bush called the Governor of Louisiana this morning and requested that everyone be evacuated from at least the New Orleans area.

This one is huge and there is nothing stopping it.

THE END IS NEIGH!

But seriously...everyone take care. I do have one question for all of you though. Why do people continue to live in a place that consistantly has disasters like this? I live in California and we have earthquakes every so often, but it doesn't happen every year... There's only been one massive one in my lifetime and a bunch of medium to small ones.

Re: hurricane season 05

Well think of it this way. I live in fort lauderdale and we haven't been hit with a major hurricane since andrew -- in 1992 -- 13 years ago and to this day we haven't been hit. this year we were touched by two minor hurricanes/storms: dennis and katrina and barely touched by three last year but never hit head on.

Now, we have great weather and opportunities and we didn't necessarily CHOOSE to live here. So no, the disasters are not consistent, we get storms just like michigan and new mexico do.

It's like a mini-rain season that happens to take our power away every now and then (mini because the hurricane's affects spanned thursday-saturday... that's not long compared to what could happen...). Yes, people have died but it's nothing compared to what COULD happen.

And for those who are to be affected/have been affected by the hurricane, if there is anything we can do for you, please let us know, we are more than glad to do so.

don't know if i'm making sense... by the way, this is all my opinion... no facts were stated (except that andrew really did hit in 1992...and that WAS 13 years ago...give or take...)

Re: hurricane season 05

There is no part of the world that is without peril in some form or another. The coast worries about hurricanes, the plains about tornados and the west about earthquakes. I live in the shadow of a big, scary volcano.

It just so happens that these weather and geographical features that endanger our lives are most often the same forces the ensure our livelihood. It's not a coincidence that the best farming lands are often flood plains.

That said, I noticed today there are a handful of FIRST teams from New Orleans and they're relatively new to our community. I wanted to take a moment to remind them, if any are reading this, that the graciousness extends beyond the competition. If there's anything y'all need as a team, as people -- as family -- please let us know.

My mom and my little brother and sister live in Biloxi, Mississippi. They have decided to ride it out and stay at home. All of the windows are boarded up anything and everything outside is tied down. I have been through some of the worst hurricanes including hugo, andrew, emily, and many many more i know what everyone in the south is going through.

My thoughts and prayers are with my friends family and everyone one back home. Good luck guys.

Re: hurricane season 05

Just an update. To put things in a perspective. . . In 1969 when Camille hit there was no flooding in the city of D'Iberville. (where my mom lives), I just heard a report that there is 6ft of water in the city of D'Iberville. I still havn't been able to contact them.

The bridge from Ocean Springs to Biloxi is gone. Many of the casinos, Treasure Bay, Grand Casino, The Copa and some other ones are on the wrong side of Hwy 90. Complete and unimaginable destruction.

Re: hurricane season 05

Yes this hurricane is much worse than Camille. I am from Gulfport, on the MS Gulf Coast. My family evacuated thankfully and they are ok, but unfortunately that is not the case for everyone down there. Everything down there is gone, just completely wiped out. Go to www.wlox.com and www.sunherald.com for videos and pictures. We got the NE corner of the storm, which is usually the worst part. This hurricane shattered high water mark records from Camille. I think some of the surges reached at least 26 feet. Death toll currently 80, expected to reach over 200. Gulfport, Biloxi, the whole area is basically gone. Infrastructure totally wiped out. No phones, electricity, anything. Even some of the roads are destroyed. New Orleans is now a giant lake. The levee was breached in a few places and the water level is still rising there. There are alot of people down there who have been severly hurt by this hurricane, it will be a long time before everything is back to normal there.
