Re: hurricane season 05

I just talked to my mom diriectly and they are ok. but the damage is worse than we thought.
I just got word that my family in D'Iberville mississippi are alive and well. Their house still stands with roof intact with about 5 ft of flood water inside they lost everything they are currently staying in a camper with friends in the neighborhood with a generator. they managed to save a BBQ grill and are using it to cook and boil water. My moms neighbors house is in the middle of the road. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this storm.

Re: hurricane season 05

I have half of my shutters closed. We will close the other half tomorrow. The weather is expected to be really bad in about 24 hours from now. (between about midnight and 8 AM) We are looking at a category 1 for my area. The west coast of Florida should get it worse. My friend's house is still being rebuilt from last year. His roof blew off in Hurricane Frances and the house blew down in Hurricane Jeanne.

Re: hurricane season 05

well the only thing i hate about shutters if i don't look at the clock i don't know what time it is. i sleep in waaaaaaaaaay to late b/c the sun doesn't shine in...

i went home but back to school... Jupiter and Hobe Sound (that's in Palm Beach-Martin County area) is suppose to get the eye passing over...
Broward and Miami and many other counties will be affected with mass rain and flooding. well that the east coast of Florida...where it enters on the West... and those counties will experience bad conditions. Well many parts of Florida will from the major hurricane force winds to the tropical storm winds. and the storm many be affecting the northeast us too.

I hope everyone will be safe..and power restored quickly. It is a huge pain without power. Please be careful with down powerlines and walking outside. We all love to go outside and see the damage and all but be cautious.

Re: hurricane season 05

Being amateur radio operators, my family leaves right after the hurricane to help at shelters or where ever help is needed. It is now illegal to listen to police bands on a radio or scanner while driving, but today we did that. We are allowed to because of the our licenses. All day we were listening to the Martin County Emergency Operations Center and emergency communications. I don't know where I will be deployed in the next ten hours or so, but I plan to help many people, possibly saving lives. I better go get some sleep soon, it will be kind of hard with that hurricane.

Remember, don't step in puddles. Don't touch metal fences. Don't do anything stupid like that because there will be down powerlines everywhere. Barely anyone is killed in a hurricane; many people are killed afterwards from doing stupid things. Never run your generator unless it is in a very well ventillated area and let it cool down before refueling. Do not go out driving Monday unless absolutely needed. Leave the roads open for emergency vehicles.

School in Martin County is canceled Monday and Tuesday so far. Good luck everyone and stay safe.

Re: hurricane season 05

*Sounding like a news reporter:*
The wind outside is really strong. The shutters are raddling and were raddling all through the night from about 3:00 AM on. it is still really bad at about 10:30 and the power here went out for awhile. Power is still out all over the area except right where I am because I am right next to the hospital and since the winds just died down below 60 miles per hour, FP&L crews were out here trying to restore power to the hospital.

The eye of the storm is currently passing just south of us. The wind is ocming from the east. We tried opening the side door and couldn't because of the pressure of the air outside and wind, two of us couldn't push it open.

We could see through a very small crack in our shutters and a car went driving by and blew sideways off the road. The guy kept going. Another guy was just killed because he went outside during the storm to check damage to his house. He was hit by flying debris.

I guess that's all for now. I can't imagine what it is like further south near West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami.

Re: hurricane season 05

well my rents have power again in palm city... and some parts of martin county..

it will be a while for Broward and Miami counties on the east coast of Florida

I've talked to Arefin..he is fine.. he hates of course no power.. so no cd...

thank goodness for the cold front.. Florida is in 50s 60s for a while..

I'm not sure what's up in the Naples area...

i hope everyone gets back power soon. i know it's something we all rely on and want..

this has been an interesting hurricane season..breaking many records.. I've started this thread about the first and hopefully tropical storm alpha is the last for the year... the season ends soon thankfully enough...

my thoughts are with all the victims of the 05 storms...

Re: hurricane season 05

Up here in the northeast we are getting a nor'easter today which is being fueled by the remnants of Hurricane Wilma with heavy rains and winds in many areas. They are comparing it to the conditions that were dramatized in the movie "Perfect Storm" based on the storm of 1991. Although our damage nowhere near compares to that of our friends to the south who have been experiencing hurricane after hurricane, we have received more than 13 inches more rain than usual for the month, and many are experiencing power outages, flooding in basements, roofs leaking (that would be me), and raw sewage backing into basements by storm drains overfilling. They are predicting up to 7 inches of heavy wet snow for the Berkshire mountains of MA tonight. I'm dreading the coming winter.

Re: hurricane season 05

many of us broward-ers still don't have power...or phone...
but great news! as of 1-2 days ago, I can officially flush the toilet (which is a big thing, trust me).
There's a major water/ice shortage (not to mention gas) here but thankfully, we have all three.

I still don't have power but I got to sneak on at a friend's house. We are fine, the majority of the people i've spoken to are fine. We are very lucky actually, the majority of us have only lost trees, shingles, and maybe a few dents here or there. I know some people that lost their whole roof.

It's funny, after being without power for 4 1/2 days you don't really care any more. I've made some friends with neighbors, walked around a lot and read a bunch for my SAT2s. School-wise, 25% of the schools have power as of now and they're working 'round the clock to get it to the rest of the schools for monday. We don't know whether that will happen or not.

I have some really sweet footage during the hurricane (we thought the eye came and went outside...it turned out to be right before the hardest part of the hurricane). I walked outside and filmed a bit but I got yelled at to come back inside. I'll post it up asap.

But the bottom line: we're okay! Just...no power for a while. Considering that I live in an area that didn't get power after Katrina because they DIDN'T KNOW OUR COMPLEX EXISTED... it may be a while. Updates later, wishes go out to all the people who were affected in wilma.

Re: hurricane season 05

Oh yea…. I am back … again. I am sitting in Amanda’s dorm at FIT before I head to Orlando for the weekend. I do have power back at my house but still don’t have the phone line. Tytus and Amanda also says they are fine (Tytus: I got the BEST WAI PICTURE EVER). Anywho, as far as I know, everyone here in Broward County is safe. There were a lot of damage from Wilma, but we are recovering. Wilma has shown me what a hurricane can do, roof and shutters flying around, fences on the ground, big trees in the streets and backyard. If there was one thing I learned from this it is... NEVER play with the power of wind and water.
