[OCCRA]: Can we do this?

A few of my teammates were discussing design ideas at lunch today and came up with an idea to have interchangeable arrms; one for offense and one for defense. If we make both arms the same weight and out of the same materials (electrical, pneumatics, etc.), can we possible do that? We're think no, but we were just wanting a clarification. Thanks for your time!

Re: [OCCRA]: Can we do this?

Official Answer:
Making alternate components presents the team and the inspectors with a set of problems. These problems include the following:

  1. Weight of the robot must be tested and inspected for each set of end effectors.
  2. Safety issues for each set of end effectors must be inspected for each unit.
  3. Appropriate attachments, wiring, pneumatics must be done for both configurations.
All inspections occur before the start of matches. This presents problems if a team changes an arm or other component. The rules read that the robot MUST be re-inspected if major function modifications are made. Your inspectors are also the referees and will not be available to do this.

If you want this path pursued and want a formal answer, please ask for permission and I will take it to the full Game and Kit Committee for their decision.

As a result I am NOT giving an answer to this question at this time. Please re-submit if you are serious about this path and I will seek an official answer.
