Signed up yesterday. Confirmed today. I am now the mentor of FVC Team #55. I am at a new school and the students are pretty excited about the idea of a robotics team.

our school is having alott of trouble because we are not within the radius of an event. do you think they'll let us register and just not compete?

In this thread, Rich Kressly stated how if an event is not filled to capacity that FIRST may open registration to the entire U.S. Since you are from Phoenix, traveling to the Northeast or South Carolina might be hard, but Texas is the closest at about 900 miles away. If the San Antonio FVC Regional doesn't fill up, try registering there.

If it is too far to get to any of the "official" events, create your own "unofficial" event. Get other teams in your area together and have your own competition. FIRST is publishing the game rules and competition structure. Just use that information to structure your own event, advertise it to the teams in your area, set it up in your high school gym, and have a good time.

The VEX product line was designed, in part, around the "competition in a box" idea. The concept was that small groups of people, or small groups of teams, could get together and hold thier own small, neighborhood-sized, competitions whenever they wanted. The structure would be simple, easy to implement, and without a whole lot of bureaucracy. The hope was that unofficial events would pop up all over the place, and they would provide pathways into the formal competition structure. Things are not quite there yet, but progress is being made. In the mean time, there is nothing that says you cannot get a little ahead of the implementation curve, and have your own event right now.

There will be an unofficial event in the Los Angeles area on Nov 19th. Details will be posted in the SCRRF forum as we get them. At least we're closer than Texas.

Dave's idea is great ...
and if you want to know the official rules about when registration opens up outside the radius it's right here:

The November 19th date has been changed to December 10th at Birmingham High School, across from High Tech High. Wendy Wooten of Team 22 is coordinating the event.
