If any one reads wired magazine There was an artical about a year ago that was about Da Vinci Designing robots (pre electricity) I also remember reading about a competition based on this project (likely in either wired or POP SCI). So it is possible and im sure if any team could do it an be competitive then they would win at least a design award. Think a fully autonomous robot without any need for a programmer.

Um...yes, I have.

A very, very old marshmallow. One with the approximate consistency of plaster-coated styrofoam. It and its fellow bag-mates had been forgotten in the corner of a cabinet in our trailer for slightly under two years.

I failed, but I think it was only because I was trying to use a safety match. Had it been a strike-anywhere kind, I believe it would have worked.

Why do I think of the 20-sided dice I have for MTG life counters??? Well, they're bit circular, a bit square, and have many Triangles. Why has FIRST not used these yet as game objects???

My sister has either eaten or burnt too many of them in front of campfires for me to even try that, and by then, a fire has already started. Otherwise, something very very wierd would be going on. (For the record, I don't even eat marshmallows)

there is absolutely no way of guessing what first will throw at us next, in no way will it be similar to previouse games for many reason, one being that people will just make similar robots to suit similar games, another one being that they do look on this forum and they take all your guesses and go against it, First is never going to be predictable. though many of you have great ideas about what it might be you could be completely right or completely wrong they could mix all the shapes or use no shapes at all, the point is first has and always will surprise us in many ways.

Why, exactly, does Dave continue to make a thread for us to give ideas for portions of the game in?

I don't think Dave et al are devious enough to ask for our ideas simply so they can go "Ok, here's what we CAN'T do, just so we can throw them off!"

While there will likely be at least one completely new aspect we've never seen before, the GDC has certainly incorporated bits and pieces of previous games before.

I do agree that guessing is entirely pointless though (although it does pass the time)

And a lot of fun. When you start guessing, people can come up with some crazy ideas that may or may not be used at some point in the future. It doesn't help with the current year's game, but might help Dave with future ones. Or he'll just make us laugh. The point is that it is fun. Not productive, but fun. Like minesweeper.

My guess:balls will somehow be used in this years game. But I would not be suprised at all if balls were not used either.

Make up your freekin mind! And yees, balls will be used this year, although not inthe way anyone else has specified. I think that kitbot this year will have a gerbil ball drive train, effectivly your robot inside a giant plastic sphere. I don't know how anything on this sphere gets used (except maybe have a platform float around the ball with arms and such on the platform). That's my bet, if not for this year, then for the first year we have water on the field as a majority of the field.

honestly i think alot of what FIRST uses each year has to do with cost/availability for both themselves and teams. pretty much since the floppies things have been commonly available. playground balls, soccer balls, plastic totes, playground/exercise balls, PVC pipe, etc. they need to make it so that everyone has access to them.

as far as balls go i would love to see balls on a different, like golf balls. can you picture 500 golf balls on the Field at once, yea it will never happen because field reset would be ridiculous but...just think about it
