has anyone tried to use a usb to serial cord for the cmucam2 on a laptop and got it to work. how do you get the laptop to recognize that its coming from the usb port

Well you can't use the adapter that came with your mouse, the protocol is different. The mouse logic is setup to be either a USB or a serial port, and uses voltage level to sense which mode it is in. The good news is you can buy an adapter: http://www.provantage.com/buy-7tdwu0...9-shopping.htm. This is one I found by googling USB serial adapter.
