I had this sent to me today thru the GM system and thought that there might be some interest - maybe you could tell them that FIRST has been doing this for years!
Ron YES! Expo 2005 is a unique collaboration among state agencies, corporations, universities, youth organizations, professional societies, and business development organizations from throughout Michigan. The goal is to inspire middle and high school students to pursue education and careers in science and engineering. In a hands-on setting, corporate exhibitors will expose students to exciting science and engineering careers. Universities and community colleges will showcase the educational pathways to these careers and demonstrate the excitement of studying science and engineering. Special technology-based displays and exhibits will fascinate students about the world of science and engineering. A high-energy live/multimedia show will be performed several times during the day that will highlight exciting technologies and fascinate students about the world of science, engineering, and technology Where: Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan When: Wednesday, October 26, 2005. Morning and afternoon sessions are being planned 9:00 am – 12:30 pm, 11:30 am - 3:00 pm, and 3:30 - 6:30 pm. xTech Show Times: 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, and 5:30 pm What: A trade show style event that will bring together companies and universities from throughout Michigan to inspire middle and high school students to pursue careers in science and engineering. A high-tempo multi-media show will demonstrate some of the cool stuff engineers and scientists can do in their careers and will be presented at 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, and 5:30 pm. Who: High school and middle school students throughout southern Michigan. The goal is to reach up to 15,000 students with special focus on under-represented groups. Why: The YES! Expo 2005 takes place at a pivotal time in attracting Michigan youth to science and engineering education. Statistics indicate that in recent years the number of science and engineering degrees awarded in the U.S. has dropped dramatically. As a result, industry leaders state that there are not going to be enough skilled engineers, scientists, and technicians to fill the growing number of occupations. Besides these trends, minorities and women are also under-represented in all areas of engineering and science. The YES! Expo 2005 will tackle this problem head-on by promoting and encouraging students in grades 8-12 to choose exciting and rewarding careers in engineering and science. Increasing the number of engineers and scientists is extremely important to the future of Michigan’s industry and economy. How: Michigan companies are sponsoring tickets to be given to youth at no charge. Please visit the website for more details on free tickets... http://yes.mtu.edu GM Exhibit: GM will have an exciting exhibit in the Gate G atrium area of Ford Field.Make sure you come visit our display! We will be there all day and promise to not disappoint the kids. |

Re: Youth Engineering & Science Expo @ Ford Field on October 26th, 2005
Note to ALL participating teams @ YES:
It is my understanding that the IFI electronics will not be unpacked for YES. This is due to the fact that the same field is scheduled to travel from Detroit to Greece, NY for the Rah Cha Cha Ruckus, which needs have it shipped and 100% functional on the following Friday. Make sure to bring your OI radio and power supply. Also, be prepared to change the channel on the OI so that all six on the field uses it's own channel number. |
