Arrow New to FIRST

Hello,
My team and I are new to FIRST Robotics, we just started this year. If anyone could give me some good tips or sites for a first time team who needs to learn all of the basics.

Re: NEW 2 FIRST

Welcome to FIRST and to CD. If you have any questions, look around this site's many subforums for answers, use "search" (located in the orange bar at the top of the page) to find ancient threads to answer the question, or just ask anyone here. The more you ask, the more you learn. The more you search before asking, the less you get of people saying "search before you post". I know there are other sites around that may answer your questions as well; a partial list may be found on the bottom left side of the Portal.

At this time, the most helpful subforum for your team is probably ALL of them.

Hold on to your hats, keep all arms and legs inside the vehicle, hang on as you start the wild ride known as FIRST, and welcome aboard!

Re: New to FIRST

Welcome to the FIRST family.

Check out FIRSTWiki that has a lot of good information and especially these forums. And when and doubt ask someone. If they can't they will be surely to let you know who to contact.

FIRST is a great thing to be apart of and we are glad you and your team have joined. Good luck this year too!

Re: NEW 2 FIRST

Welcome to the non stop disco, err robotics forum that is.

So this issue is discussed quite often, just newbies don't exactly know because they haven't been around that much. So refer to this stickie here its quite an extensive discussion and also very intresting.

And I posted this before, its actually very funny so if you'd like Posting And You (flash will be needed)

Welcome!

Chief Delphi is the main resource I use, mainly because people OTHER THAN ME *shifting eyes* are addicted to this, so you can get answeres quite quickly. However, as stated, searching is good (very much so) before you post. So welcome, and I hope you love it!

1. www.team341.com to order team in a box - a free set of DVD's
2. MOEMentum FYI is also an outstanding resource for rookies and all available on the web here: http://www.moe365.org/moementum.php
3. Chiefdelphi - you are already here. May I suggest the whitepapers section?

Re: New to FIRST

Make sure your team and mentors are paying attention to all the deadlines.
Spend some time really looking through www.usfirst.org
Welcome! I see there are 3 potential rookie teams in Idaho this year. As soon as your main contact signs up for a regional you will get an official number.

Re: New to FIRST

My biggest tip would simply become an active member of these forums and ask lots of questions, and one day soon, you'll be able to answer lots of questions.

Jumping into the world of ChiefDelphi is a big step to take, but be brave and stick with it. Occassionally we'll get into heated discussions but don't let that scare you off. Stick with us here and while it may seem a little hostile at first, I gaurantee you'll come to enjoy this place a lot!

If you have any specific questions you are not comfortable posting for whatever reason, please feel free to Private Message me or any other regulars on here, as most of us will be glad to answer your question.

And again, welcome to PRIMERO and let the success begin!

Hello all,

Our technology teacher has just signed us up for FIRST with the regional director, the director is trying to get other schools involved as well but we're not sure how many others will be joining us. Thanks for all of the advice. I was just wondering... how will my team know when we have been registered, just notification by the regional director?

I'm from South Eastern Idaho and if any of you are from around here let me know!!!

Look on this page http://www.usfirst.org/frc/public/ find your regional and click "Team List" if you are registered, you'll be on it (tentatively until you pay).

Re: New to FIRST

Welcome!

You might also take a look at www.technokats.org (no, it's not a shameless plug)
Specifically under "file archives" and "Links". There are design documents, i.e. transmissions, posted that can be very helpful.

You should also take a look at the "white papers" section of ChiefDelphi forums, like Rich suggested. There's tons of information in there spanning a wide variety of topics.

When in doubt ask - take some time to search these forums and other sites and you'll be in good shape.

Re: New to FIRST

Congratulations! You have taken the first step and that is getting on cd and asking for help. Welcome to FIRST! It will become a healthy addiction, I promise! But seriously, you will love it, and FIRST will have an awesome impact on your life. It's awesome to be hearing from a new team on cd too. FIRST really is just a huge family, as you can see in my signature. Congrats on starting a new team, I hope you guys have the best of luck. If you have any questions or simply want some random robotics nerd from Kansas to get in touch with, you can send me an email or something, as I'm sure you could also do with pretty much anyone here on cd.

Re: New to FIRST

Welcome! This program is going to impact your students and mentors in ways that you cannot begin to imagine yet. FIRST is a giant family - complete with friendships, frustrations, and fantastic fun.

Please let your team mentor(s) know about the Non-Engineering Mentor Organization (NEMO). NEMO facilitates the exchange of information between team mentors regarding the logistics relating to a FIRST Robotics Competition team. That would include all the non-technical subjects such as fundraising, public relations, recruiting mentors and students, arranging travel, etc. You can download a flyer about NEMO here. Best wishes to you and I hope to see you out here on the East coast in the future!
