Match or qualifying points are the tie breakers, If you score 100 points and your opponent scores 10 then you get 2 RP and 10 qualifying or match points, your opponent gets 0 rp but still gets those 10 match points, this means that even though your very strong alliance was able to score 100 points another team that won 26 to 25 is in much better shape than you are in overall standings.
Thats not right either, you got them mixed up. Alan posted the rule from 8.3.3, which is the tournament section. Perhaps you should re-read it.

Each team on the losing Alliance will receive zero Qualifying Points. In the event of a tie Match Score, all six teams will receive one Qualifying Point.

The winning alliance teams will receive a number of Ranking Points equal to the un-penalized score (the score without any assessed penalties) of the winning or losing alliance, WHICHEVER UN-PENALIZED SCORE IS LOWER.

This is why it is important to read the rules for content. Read them and know them for they are your friend.

Re: quick question as a newbie

ok to end all confusion:

RP is "Round Points". You take your opponents score and that is the tiebreaker after overall win-loss-tie.

So if my record is 4-4-1 and another team is 4-4-1, the team whos opponent on average scores the most points is the leader.
