Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

O the days of when i had to decide which college i was going to go to. Those days were so good.

Well good luck to the Class of '06. And remember if the school you decide to go to doesn't have FIRST you can always try and start a team .

Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

So far I've applied to Kettering University and University of Michigan-Dearborn, I've been accepted to both but I haven't decided which I'm going to go to or if I'm going to apply somewhere else.

I am most likely going to attend Kettering. Regardless of other acceptances. They gave me the $30,000 scholarship, so that helps. I'll also be applying for the FIRST scholarship for Kettering. I really liked their campus size. It's location I can get over though (Flint has a bad rep).

I'm concerned about what's going on with my UMich application. I submitted it probably two months ago, but it says that the application is incomplete. Through the Wolverine Access system (and an email from UMich) that they are missing my test scores (in my case, my ACT scores). Just to be sure that they had my scores, I went to the ACT website that the UMich email notification said to go to, and I paid for another copy of my scores to be sent to them. Two weeks later now, it still says that they are waiting for my scores. Anyone else have this problem with UMich? I'm going to call admissions on Monday, I'm getting a bit fed up.

I actually just got my Michigan Tech acceptance letter today in the mail. I really only applied there for fun (the app was free and no essay, so why not?). I'm barely considering it, because it's much too far from anywhere.

Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

Which kind of report did you have sent? It seems like ACT is rather slow at sending this stuff - i.e. it takes a few weeks to send stuff. Here's quoted from their website:

Quote:
* REGULAR REPORT is a complete report and is normally processed within one week after receipt of your request. These reports are delivered in the next processing cycle requested by the college or agency to which you are requesting delivery, at least twice a month.
* PRIORITY REPORT is normally processed one working day after receipt of your request and usually delivered three business days later.
* MAILGRAM REPORT is normally processed one working day after receipt of your request and usually delivered one to two business days later.
So basically the first is 1 - 3 weeks, the second is 4 business days, the last is 2 - 3 business days.

Source.

Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

Spring Arbor - Accepted (not really surprised mind you)
GVSU - Accepted (again, not really surprised)
Valparaiso University - Accepted (this makes me happy)
The Most likely scenario:
Attend GVSU freshmen year and then transfer (hopefully) to Valparaiso. I can't afford to go much out of state with one of my older sisters is still at Oberlin college and considering Grad school. Plus I get more out of my AP credits if I go to GVSU, however I really don't want to bother with transferring credits if I have to. While the credit would be nice, I won't object to having to take the classes again. Plus, Valpo has a Professional Writing major that they've only had for a few years now that I'm interested in.

Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

A note on Indiana schools...right now, they're trying really hard to get people in the state and keep them in the state. So if you tell Valpo about your situation, you might actually get a sizeable financial aid package.

Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

I'm applying to the mechatronics engineering program at the University of Waterloo. I figure it'll be cheaper to stay in Canada for the undergraduate degree, but I'll probably want a graduate degree from one of the major tech colleges in the States (plus there's the fact that I haven't taken the SATs).

Safety schools:
Concordia
McGill

I've heard that McGill's not all that it's cracked up to be; an abnormally large number of students tend to transfer to Concordia, Montreal's other English-language university, after their first year.

Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

Considering that I finally finished all of my applications and heard from another one of my schools, I figured that I might as well update my list...

UW - Madison (accepted)
Saint Mary's - Notre Dame, IN (accepted, $48,000 scholarship)
Notre Dame - Notre Dame, IN
Columbia University - NYC
Harvard
Stanford
Yale

They're all regular action, and, as far as I know, I won't be hearing from any of them before March 30th. Huzzah!

Re: Class of '06 - Where Are You Applying

Well, so far I have heard from 2 out of the 3 schools that I applied to early action:

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (accepted, $60,000 scholarship)
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (accepted, $53,700 scholarship)
University of Miami - College of Engineering (will hear back by Feb. 1st)

I am not sure which out of the three schools I am most interested in attending, but I am leaning toward UM. We will see what sort of financial assistance they will offer me.

In terms of where else I might apply for regular decision -

Cornell University
Carnegie Mellon
UCONN
Clarkson University
Georgia Tech

The only reason I did not apply to these other 5 schools early action was because there are one or more factors that I see as deterrents for wanting to attend those schools. Cornell and Clarkson are just too darn cold and out in the boonies for my liking! Carnegie Mellon sounds amazing, but I get the impression that it is very academically competitive. As for UCONN, I like it, but I don't love it. I spent a week there this summer at an engineering camp, and I was extremely bored half the time. Plus the campus isn't very pretty and it seems a little on the big side. Georgia tech sounds great, but its in the middle of a big city and I would prefer a more suburban environment.

The three that I applied to early action are by far my favorites because:

1) The quality of their academic programs is outstanding
2) Classes are taught by professors, not TAs
3) Professors are accessible after-hours for personal help
4) Numerous opportunities exist for undergrad research, internships, co-ops, and study abroad
5) All three universities take pride in their "hands-on, early on" approach
6) All three universities have displayed a sincere concern for each student's well being and foster a nurturing atmosphere

As I said before, I am currently leaning toward UM, mainly because it offers the full spectrum of majors as well as those in engineering. This is important to me because I want to be able to continue to study non-engineering related fields that I am also interested in, such as foreign language and art. Plus, I wouldn't have to worry about transferring to another school if I decided not to major in engineering. I am also considering a dual major in ocean/atmospheric science as well as engineering, and UM has a fantastic school of ocean and atmospheric science.

Good luck to everyone! I am looking forward to hearing more updates from all of you.
