Welcome to the UC Davis-Sacramento Regional

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would welcome all those attending the UC Davis-Sacramento Regional and wish you a successful season. If there is anything that we can do to improve the regional, please let us know. Feel free to PM me if you want to get in touch. We want to make sure that UC Davis-Sacramento Regional stays "The Best in the West!"

If there are any suggestions or improvements that you wish to offer, please post them here so that others can read and comment on them. For details on various events occuring at the regional, parking instructions, food services or any other information, please visit firstsac.engineering.ucdavis.edu.

For all those attending the kickoff at UC Davis, see you this Saturday.

Sincerely,
Ben

~FIRST College Rep and Regional Assistant

I highly suggest you book your rooms at the first available hotel.

There's some sort of other event going on in Davis the same weekend that cleaned out every hotel we saw last year. By now your choices are probably very limited (and either expensive, or at poor quality hotels).

I don't know where the station is going to be placed at this moment (venue layout is still being decided upon).

As I've never done the animation portion of FIRST, what have other regionals done to make sure that the animation process is organized, from what you've seen? I'm thinking more signs directing where students to go but what are some specific ideas that you would like?

If you have any suggestions, I'll make sure they make it to the committee.

Thanks,
Ben
The other Regional that my team has been to is the Pacific Northwest one, but its animation judging was even worse than the situation in Sacramento Regional.

Something that would make the Sacramento animation competition better is providing schedule and map of when and where the animation peer judging will be along with (or even on) the main program schedule when all of the teams check in to the Pit. Affirming that someone who *knows* how the judging will be carried out from Autodesk or a proxy thereof will show up at the proper time (and announced!) is also a very good idea. Last year's Pacific NW Regional had a proxy who had "absolutely no clue" even on how the voting system worked.

One of my teammates also suggested that the food provided could've been better, but I don't think you can do much about what they sell and how much they tell it for in the concession stands, right?

-Li
My team will be staying in the Super 8 Motel in Dixie, which is roughly...seven miles away from Davis, I think.

Re: Welcome to the UC Davis-Sacramento Regional

Hey Li,

Thanks for posting that message. It's been busy at college. I sent your suggestions off to the committee however I don't think the food is going to change any. But for the rest of you Davis regional attendees, do indeed show up here at let us know you're coming. We're always interested to see who on the CD forums is coming back to UC Davis.

Does anyone know if the sack lunch program will still be taking place? If it is, what is the price per lunch? Thanks in advance.

Re: Welcome to the UC Davis-Sacramento Regional

Hmm, never mind my suggestions as to improving the animation voting- It appears that it has been modified from the ground up, according to this news blast: AVA 2006.

Anyways, I look forward to attending the Davis-Sacramento Regional, because I plan to attend UC Davis if accepted.

Based on the listing at usfirst.org for the Davis-Sacramento Regional, the box lunch program appears to still be in effect. Just go to here http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2006/regional/davis.htm and click on the Pre-Order lunch option.

The food looks pretty good, maybe a little pricey (for me) but that's expected of hosted events. There are 5 menu options to choose from and there is an area for special dietary needs if you call a number. It's probably the best (and most convenient) way to do lunch or you could order your own lunches at nearby restaurants and food chains.

Re: Welcome to the UC Davis-Sacramento Regional

I'm very excited that UC Davis has taken the step to help host a regional. With all luck, maybe we can use this as a stepping stone to having regionals at more UC's!

Quick question: What will the Team Social at the D-S Regional be like? I've never attended any Team Social before.

Your correct, section 8.4 of the Davis Regional Site Info states that there will be no team social.

In any case, I'm can't wait to compete in Sacromento this year. This week's Silicon Valley regional only has like two teams from out of state, but the Davis regional has 14 teams from out side of California, including five teams from Montana! How cool is that?! Should be lots of fun.
