Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

Definitely. This game is quite a masterpiece, there is going to be lot of math strategy and designs. I think it's very cool how extension of the arm was taken away and you can only be 5 ft. tall and autonomous is going to be well interesting. Programming as a whole is going to be interesting this year. The veterans are kinda on a level playing field with the rookies too which I like. Finally, FIRST threw a complete curve ball to everyone with the new motors which if I may add are very nice.

06 the year of flying NERF balls and the CMU cam, bring it on,
-Drew

Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

It looks really fun. What I really like is the open spaces in the middle, and the different time periods to work out more of a strategy. I loved how last year had a strategy aspect, and with the different periods, it only adds to that.

However, designing the robot has been pretty difficult so far. My team has only been working on strategy and figuring out the game, while I've been coming up with robot ideas on my own time. Maybe with 20-30 other heads we'll be able to figure SOMETHING out.

Cool Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

Wow. I am so excited for this year's game. It is so interesting, and yes, a lot less complicated than Triple Play. I had thought FIRST was going to go back to squares, but circles work too. I am thinking Aim High is going to bring out more diversity in robots and that will be interesting to see. That Easy C program will be interesting to learn, and I'm really glad too because our team doesn't really have any expert programmers on it. Eighty balls in play? That is going to be amazing. And I agree it will be quite colorful. Plus I like the bigger field. Triple Play had a small field for six 'bots going at once. I can't wait, this year is going to be awesome. Good luck everyone!

Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

I think that this game is going to be really awesome. If nothing else it will be quite intersting to scout. I'm really excited to see what designs other teams come up with, but even more interesting will be their strategies. This game really lends itself to strategy development compared to last year. I think Dean Kamen definitly accomplished his task of making this more like a sporting event (by having the actual field completely void of obstacles that aren't robots and having goals at each end). Projectile robots will be really cool!!!.... And the height limit is crazy too. The robot will no longer be able to get taller than me. For once, I'll always be taller (hehehe... because I'm only 5'2"). We're one day closer to Feb. 21st...

Is 54' x 26' really bigger than 54' x 27'? I think you meant to say the openness of the field, which I think is a great thing. I think this game is going to be fast paced and fun to watch.

54' x 26' is in fact bigger than 54' x 27'. Doesn't everyone know that? But yes, I did mean the openness of the field.

Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

i love this years game. everything you could want is included. high speeds to get to each end of the field. low speeds to get your spot on the field. lots of bumping and pushing this year. it is actually encouraged? sweet. many puff balls that robots can get. a hard challenge of not being able to extend vertically this year. a game that is harder than it looks. seems like it will be a good game. i agree.

Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

I'd like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to the GDC. they did an excellent job and clearly succeeded at making a game much more strategic than Triple Play. The inclusion of the offense/defense periods mean that robots must be capable of doing multiple things, and it really opens the possibilities, unlike last year, where you could either score, or not score.

Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

This game is a lot like football. I didn't realize it until I was watching the Army Bowl for high schoolers, which, by the way, is the most entertaining game to watch because pro is boring. Anyway, alliances take turns on offense and defense, the circular goal is the parallel of a field goal, and the corner goals resemble a touchdown. Teams will have to stratetgize through it just like coming up with plays, etc. We're playing robot-friendly football!

Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

Many of you seem to be excited about the prospect of having balls launched through the air doing all sorts of crazy things. What is really going to be interesting, however, are the methods invented to launch the balls to the center goals other than the obvious cannon or softball pitching style.

Otherwise, this game will be awesome. No question.

Re: Does anyone else think this game will be awesome?

While I'm looking really forward to the game (and currently drowning in the strategies developed at our first meeting) what I'm really really looking forward to is the video's after the regionals. With balls flying everywheres, amazing last second plays, saves, etc., we are in for tons of amazing videos.

yup, <S01> in the game rules states that "No ROBOT may throw a ball with an exit velocity of greater than 12 m/s (26.8 mph). As a reference, a ball traveling at this velocity when leaving the ROBOT at an angle of 30º from horizontal with no spin will travel approximately 35 feet. A robot that violates this rule will be considered unsafe".
