CMUcam help!!!

We are using the new camera, and for some reason, after we have loaded using IFILoader, the terminal screen is completely blank. We are using a 2006 controller. What is the problem?

Re: CMUcam help!!!

you will only see activity in the screen with the OI connected by tether or radio (unless you set the code up to automatically execute.

We are connected by tether from the OI to the RC.

Are you connected directly to the camera or the RC?

Yes, we are connected directly to the RC through the computer.

We'll need more information. Did you load the camera.hex file from the zip file without recompiling? Do you have solid green LEDs on the robot controller? Are you using a USB to serial converter?

Look for the camera mounting stuff, it includes pictures as to what to connect where and why.

Someone already has done so. You'll find everything you need at Kevin Watson's place, including the CMUcam2 workbook.

Re: CMUcam help!!!

We really like the entire system this year...especially the cool bright green lights.

We did some experiments yesterday...our camera system (using bells and whistle code) was able to track the green light from about 50 feet away. In fact, our shop machinery is mostly green. The camera never once got faked out by all of that.

We didn't even do any calibration as of yet...almost afraid to mess up a good thing. :-)

We were able to operate two variable speed controllers (no motor connected) to demonstrate the ability to turn a robot toward the light. Really cool.

Of course, we got this to work after experiment, failing and then reading docs to learn we needed the 2006 controller and the latest IFILoader .12.

Last year, it took us 5 weeks to get the robot to track and follow green...this year..we did it by day 3.

Thanks to all involved in making this easy to use.

Regards,
ChuckB

You need to think of the information the camera is giving your robot at this point. The camera is locked onto and pointing at the target.

You know how how far to the left/right the pan is. With this information your robot should be able to figure out which way it needs to turn. (ie if the camera unit is facing off to the left, that's where the light is and your robot needs to turn left).

Last year I had the kids make a simple "find the light" program that was basically

if(camera is off to the left)
turn left slowly

else if(camera is off to the right)
turn right slowly

This wouldn't make for a great "follow" program in competition, but it's a great place to start at and understand what you're working with.
