Using multiple controllers

Question #1:
Can we use multiple controllers in our robot design. For instance, can
we use a 'smart controller' to control the movement of the pistons.
This means that the Innovation FIRST robot controller would sent a set
point to the slave 'smart controller' and the slave 'smart controller'
would take care of performing the function.
