The Edu-bot (aka Robovations) was pre vex and pretty much opened up the way for vex. The motors are very similar with the exception of the clutch and the mini-RC and Vex controller do basically the same functions.

vex are very good to start with. My team has a jv vex program that is pretty good. It gets the freshman aquinted with robotics
