This is tough advice, but since its your first year, build any robot and go to a regional. At the regional, get the teacher to interact with other teams and the students to learn from the surrounding atmosphere. You can also ask established teams who are willing to help for some help. At least you are building a robot - you are lucky. These issues need to be sorted out slowly. Good luck.
