OK, Take a close look at the lines in the sketch. It's a cob-web of the hundreds of different planes that's working in that one 2-D sketch.

Re: 103 Inventor Paradox

While you have not mentioned it, I assume you feel this is a bad thing and would like it to go away. Do you have any idea what is causing this? Could it be a video driver issue, uncertified video card or lack of a service pack. FYI, I have read that SP3 can cause some problems. Can't remember right now but I would be careful.

Re: 103 Inventor Paradox

No, it''s not a bad thing.

This happens when you create a part in a sub-assembly that's in a bigger assembly. The program is fine, it's doing what its soppose to do.

This is just a joke on our part. I guess no one got it.

Still not gettin' it. I am reknown to being slow with humor

So, what's the punch line? Give me something to go on like, "How many Inventor planes does it take to change a light bulb?"

Re: 103 Inventor Paradox

I've never seen Inventor behave this way when working with assemblys and sub assemblys (demoted parts).

Can you more accuratly describe whats going on? Is it displaying all the work planes used in the subassembly during construction as grid lines in the sketch? Are you projecting them your self?

I to am a little confused. Am I missing the joke to?

Re: 103 Inventor Paradox

What's actually happening is a part (a spacer) is being created on a pole. When I told the program to begin the sketch on one side of a washer, it went into the sketch mode. Now because the part being created is in a sub assembly that's in an even bigger assembly, it has to take into account all of the other planes from every single other sketch on every plane.

Often people tell me that Inventor is the greatest system, others say it's impossible to learn. It's just ironic that I got this (by chance, I didn't plan this), which to me represents insanity.

Re: 103 Inventor Paradox

Can you not turn off the visibility of some of the parts and assemblies that do not pertain to creating the spacer?

Re: 103 Inventor Paradox

Well, yah if you want to

Just create a new part that's not beginning in the assembly (a new .ipt file).

but it's easier just to do it in the assembly. You get the same result, whatever you prefer.
