Go to Post I swear, sometimes it seems like FIRST has got a room full of monkeys writing code. Maybe the monkeys should spend less time flinging fecal matter at each other and more time testing the code before posting it :-). - Kevin Watson [more]

Re: pic: 114 wheels

Having watched our machinist toil at making her hubs for the past week or so, let me just say, superlative! Very nice finish...

What stock did this start as?

Re: pic: 114 wheels

This all started as 8x8 square stock (hard to believe, eh?)

We had it CNC'd at our sponsor's machine shop.

Each wheel is 6 inch diameter, with 1.5" wide tread. They turned out so perfect that when you ding them together, the spokes act as tuning forks, and the chime lasts for a couple minutes.

Re: pic: 114 wheels

I'm going to have to mar them a bit, the whole tuning fork effect is starting to give me a headache...

Re: pic: 114 wheels

How thick are the spokes? (thick meaning in the Z direction on the CNC machine on which they were milled)

The wheels started out of 6"x6"x1.5" thick Aluminum 6061 bar stock and the wheels are 6 inch diameter, with 1.25" wide tread.
This is a movie of the wheel being machined on the CNC (10MB Quicktime movie).
Here is a Block of material before machining
Here is the Wheel after the first operation

Re: pic: 114 wheels

At what feed rate is that mill running? We run ours so much slower than that, but we also don't pour buckets of water onto our parts, so.
