Net Nanny's

Out of curiosity, does any other team have to share an Internet with a school that has software like Light speed or another Net Nanny? They were designed to stop students from going to inappropriate sites, but ours seems to just block large clunks of the net, for example it blocked Kevin's programming code site. We managed to get that one unblocked, and have discovered a way around it, but these things are time consuming. I was just wondering if anyone else had to live with a problem like this, as ours limits what we can do on line, blocking some of the FIRST forum sites.

Re: Net Nanny's

Our admin has some basic firewall protections and blocked sites. occasionally they go through and block certain sites individually. it rarely blocks anyhting we need, and even if it does, we can ping the site and get past the block.

Our school has BESS. It would be a real pain, because it blocks basically everything. But luckily one of our students is an assistant to the tech people at the school and got them unblocked for us.

Re: Net Nanny's

Team 237's school has filtering software.. I think. I know it limits the use of the internet, and things like that..

But, they do it in a really weird way which I'm not gonna get into now.

As for my college, it has teh stupidest security protocol software ever. Your password has to be a minimum of 8 characters, have at least 3 of 4 of the following in there.

Capital letter, Lower-Case letter, number, symbol.

I go to school in Ct, where companies like UTC, and other high-tech highly security driven companies operate and their passwords are not that extreme.

We always laugh about it in class. It's so dumb.

Re: Net Nanny's

Our network admins have been becomming more agressive with the filter system and recently block Chiefdelphi and the FIRST Q/A. This was because the address had "forum" in it. It took several long days to get things fixed, however I agree this things can be very irriatating. For a very long time simply accessing a site through secure https would get around our filter until they completely blocked off the port.

Re: Net Nanny's

My school has several of the 8e6 R3000 filtering servers.
Chiefdelphi was blocked. It took several weeks to fill out paperwork and get the admins to unblock it.

75% of the team websites are also blocked by the filter.

My high school has over 4500 computers; there are only a few people that work at the helpdesk rooms (on each side of the school).

Re: Net Nanny's

Our schools computers have them, though it's on a new system which is slightly more lenient. I say this because the last filtering system we used was absolutely horrible in the amount of content it blocked. One thing that could be construed as inappropriate for school was shot down almost as soon as it was sent down the pipe.

However, the blocking of http://images.google.com is a bit annoying when you have to get images for a school project.

Re: Net Nanny's

1293's schools have St. Bernard's filters in place. No real interference with the team's operations--then again, the only sites you really need in the first place are the FIRST site, CD, and kevin.org, so maybe we're just lucky to have unblocked sites.

Having lived with it for at least two years as a student at Irmo, it's not too terrible. You just have to lay off the games and (dare I say it?) use the school computers for school work.

So we aren't the only people that have to deal with the ever annoying bess. Good thing our science teacher is also the tech person at our school so he can unblock sites for us. But we don't even have access to internet while we build the robot because we do it at our sponsor's location and they don't let us on the internet while we are there. We just have to do all of our research before we go and then if anything REALLY important needs to be found out then we can go log onto a computer there and use it but only after finding one that we are allowed to use and a mentor to watch us work. (This was before I was a mentor but we still have a lack of internet unless it is absolutely necessary)

Re: Net Nanny's

Our school has websense. While it's kind annoying to not be able to get to some websites, you tend to get used to it after a while. A lot of the sites blocked aren't important anyway.

Re: Net Nanny's

We have webSENSE here, It is a really good blocking system, and it makes school boring, I work with computers in class, and I get done with my work in about 5-10 min, leaving 85-80 min of nothing to do, paint is gone along with all of the games, they banned Koreus.com, and my friend hates school now because playing on the computer was the only thing he looked forward to (he had 96-100 grades in his classes)
