using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
I installed 3ds max 30day trial and it expired now, and I was wondering
have any of you actually bought the software for 3500$? or are you simply not using it between seasons? the only stand-alone license is at my school, and I graduate in a few month, but I am simply addicted to this program, =( you think autodesk will renew the license if I tell the I participated in FIRST? ![]() |

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
you should have 5 seats on the license, so if you haven't used all of them, just take it home, install it and register! The only caution is that you're not allowed to use it for professional work (ie, something you get paid for)

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
If you're a student you can buy Max for about $670, or a one year license for about $170. If you only plan to use it for educational purposes.

we installed it on (counting...) 3laptops and 7pc's all together if im not mistaken (give or take a pc). that's counting 1 laptop and one pc that's in my and my friends house the rest are only used in the lab |

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
did my team break the rules then by installing the 30 day trial on 12 computers for a rendering farm?

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
no. the 30 day trial is good for as many installs as you want. thats why it's there: to be tried out and used a bit. as long as you get rid of it after the competiton is over, it's cool.

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
I use max a lot on the offseason, just to improve my skills. Autodesk was kind enough to give each team that won an AVA at nationals any Autodesk software of their choice. You can guess what I picked.

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
For a rendering farm, you only need one authorized copy of 3ds Max. All of the other computers can just have a basic installation (i.e. no help files, etc.) and do not need to be authorized or be subject to the 30-day limit to be able to run the backburner server program to accept rendering instructions from the backburner manager.

or you can shell out 2000 bucks for autodesk VIZ, or download GMAX (watered down free Max for game modding) while you still can.
Alternatively, get a different program, like Blender. Just a question: what kind of license do you get from Autodesk for winning? |

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
I think they were educational licenses, but they didn't bring up the 'educational license' notice that I've seen. Even then, I think I do remember reading somewhere that they were educational.

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
I foyu didn't use all the licences that came with the software, then just intall and unysed one on your computer. I also think there is a way to transfer a licence from one computer to another, so you can delete the copy that is at school and transfre it to your computer. Look it up first, i'm not sure.
We always intall on our home computers first, cuz they are faster renderers anyway. We also get to tinker in the offseason . |

Re: using 3ds max after FIRST is over?
I dunno. Judging by the quality of the work I'm seeing in here, y'all are some SERIOUS tinkerers!
We've got Max installed on 2 computers in the lab, but we are definitely going to get much more dedicated. One of the best things about this whole competition is that it has gotten our principal committed to developing an digital design/publishing curriculum at our school--web, content development, graphics and animation. I'm hopeful that by this time next year we will have many more kids involved--plus more resources! |
