Lightbulb Internet over a Cell Phone

I'm sure we all know how some regionals don't have internet access. So I wanted to find a way to get internet access with my cell phone. I'm talking the $20 Nokia Tracfone, so the normal methods are out the window, as far as I know. I've thought about building my own Acoustic coupler, but I can't from the phones I have. I've also thought about shelling out some cash for a data cable, but no luck there.

Then it hit me tonight. Use AX.25 ham radio software. If I could ever figure out how to set it up, that is!

Anyone want to have a hash-session on this?

Generally - your service provider should offer you a cable and allow you to use the cellphones inherent data capabilities. Otherwise, your stuck using it as a jury rigged phone line - and due to the less accurate signals of a cellphone, you'll be lucky to push 14.4kbs.

Lightbulb Re: Internet over a Cell Phone

I have 14 cellphones, 5 ehich are data capable. If your phone has data capabillities (I don't think Tracphone does) than you should be able to buy it from YOUR CARRIER OR ONLINE AT THE PHONE MANUFACTURERS WEBSITE. fOR EXAMPLE, i BOUGHT MY lg vx-8100 HAS A usb CABLE THAT i PURCHASED AT tHE vERIZON STORE iN THE v-cAST mUSIC PACK, WHICH GIVES ME A 25% DISCOUNT AS i AM A aaa MEMBER AND aaa GIVES DISCOUNTS ON HEADSETS. (sorry I don't have time to spellcheck as I have to go to my next class.

here's possibly an idea for you in reference to using ham equipment

I doubt you could use the tracphone for anything more than calling, as its not designed for more than that.

Actually many phones and data cables are rated at speeds upto 1MB.

I was going to do this with my phone and I bought the data cable and everything but found out, after installing and configuring my computer, that my phone, doesn't support the option as a modem, or atleast I cant find a driver for it.

It is very popular, especially in todays world to see people with their cellphones tied to their laptop to hook up to the net where there isn't WIFI. I know I would if my phone was compatable.
