Omnidirectional Drives Aiming High

I was disappointed not to see any omni-drive bots at PNW. Our software team leader was especially sorry that he didn't get to see a holonomic drive playing the game. Any feedback from other regionals on whether the maneuverability of an omnidrive overcame its lesser pushing ability?

Re: Omnidirectional Drives Aiming High

I can only remember 2 Holonomic drive systems from the BAE Regional.

40 had one and it was very obvious, you could see those mecanum wheels without any problem. They were a shooter so they were attacked during their offensive periods and were easily pushed around due to their wheels. They made it to the finals due to their autonomous which scored a couple 3 pointers which was enough to win.

213's wheels were harder to see but they floated around in every direction like 40. They were a side scorer so they had an easier time and weren't harassed nearly as much, because of that I didn't get to see anyone push them or anything.

Those teams didn't really use their manuverability to their advantage. 40's autonomous did in one instance. There was a defensive autonomous from another team that just went straight towards 40. 40 drove forward and then to the side and scored their balls without being touched by the defensive autonomous.

Re: Omnidirectional Drives Aiming High

40 had holomonic drive. Their autonomous, and great shooting ability got them to the semis. They also had traction plates which they lowered in when they were going to shoot, which were basically two 8" squares covered in grippy stuff. They worked well, but they still got pushed around by AM transmissions and six wheel drives (1138 did it in the qualifiers, and we did it in the semis). This game is all about the drivetrain. You can have the best shooter, but if you can't get into and hold your position, you won't score. Good shooting is so hard to find at a regional, that if you can do it you are essentially putting a big "hit me really really hard" sign on your robot.

213 had a kiwi drive. They had had a very smart, skilled driver. When pitted against them we had planned to push them out of our way, but couldn't. They had a really good dumper robot, so I'm sure they're kiwi drive helped them pick up balls.
