I think Ken hit the nail on the head here.

If you're having the flu symptoms then you caught a bug. The dust may have just irritated your throat and only made you feel worse. Those with asthma would be affected the most. Going back to the post about asbestos or something similar you have to remember that even the people who worked with asbestos years ago didn't get sick right away.................it took years. It just doesn't make sense that the dust was the cause of the sickness, rather it was just a factor contributing to the discomfort already associated with a bug.
