Re: 2Train Robotics = Class Act

Wayne,

You and your team make me so proud. I knew you would be a great inspiration to students some day, and you haven't let me down. Congratulations on your Pittsburgh win and good luck in NYC. I hope to see you real soon (probably Atlanta).

Paul

They're an awesome team, and they deserved to win. Congrats, guys: you earned it.
Ditto. Thanks to all of y'all-395, 1743, and 1038 for that time-out and the incredible competition in the finals. Thanks also to 1629 and 1370 for working with us and keeping our alliance alive even when our bot died (sorry again ). Awesome job!
This is a great example of what FIRST is about, and why I enjoy it so much. It just goes to show that there are still awesome, gracious people out there who will do what they can to help ya out. Thanks again for everything, y'all!

Wayne- no problem with the lessons. Come to IRI and I'll show ya some other fancy stuff! Doot-da-do!

His first conversation was with a girl from 116 who was really nice, he was really nervous at first but she was nice and really listened. Daniel gained a lot of confidence and I guess we have you to thank.
Wow. I'm actually almost (I said almost) speechless. I was just doing what I do, if not the best, then a lot of, which is talking (and listening), and I never realized I could have an impact like that. Since then, whenever I've talked about that regional and 2Train, I've always sheepishly admitted putting Daniel on the spot to satisfy my curiosity about your team but I won't feel guilty about it anymore!

Most of us have grown up with our parents telling us "Don't talk to strangers" but if I'm at a robotics competition, I'm now going to make it a point to talk to strangers because there are a lot of wonderful stories out there just waiting to be heard.

Thank you Wayne, you really made my day!

Heidi

Kudos and Cheers to 2Train Robotics... I am a member of that infamous team who needed the time out. The act was amazing and full of GP. Thank you guys so much, and congratulations for winning regionals! Oh, and Wayne is my hero! Wayne = Amazing Announcer Dude.

Hey, you guys still rock. Hope your luck's a bit better as far as that right side goes at Purdue, like I said before we all deserve some karma by now.

Ah, you're the coach who teaches focused driving by chucking balls at the driver...Wayne gave me that tip, I think I might just try it on our drivers next year...

We were sorry that we wound up with problems during the QFs, but would love to run with you guys again. Joe, I cannot say enough good things about Sparky we still talk about how much we miss going down to Virginia and competing with y'all. Hope all of your teams are doing well, best of luck at your regionals and we will be looking forward to seeing you again at the Championship. Now let me tell you a couple of other things regarding this T/O:

This isn't the first time we've done this. Last year at NYC we were the #1 alliance captain also. In the finals the opposing alliance had their star capper, team 38, break its tetra capture mechanism. We wanted to see them play their best so we called the T/O. Our students have also taken note of the other instances of GP that they've witnessed on and off the field. Let's just say at Pittsburgh and Virginia they learned from some of the very best. Right before finals, I was busy as the Emcee talking with the event coordinators to see if we were going to go to awards first or continue running finals. One of my students comes over and tells me, well our rookie alliance partner through a chain, we can fix it, but I think the other alliance captain (393 FMJ that rocked) could really use a timeout. I gave him the nod, and he went over to the head referee, the wonderful Carol Perotto, and requested the T/O for the other alliance. These are the moments that we all strive for in FIRST as mentors, as participants, and as teammates when our students understand the true meaning of FIRST and that winning isn't everything. We knew that the fully running #2 alliance would put up a pretty even match. I don't think we had more fun and were ever more friendly with the opposing alliance in the finals than here at Pittsburgh. Doo doo doo-ing it with 393. Jeremiah thanks for the Bull Whip lesson btw.

Other instances of GP at Pitts. 1708 Natural Selection, was drafted for the elimination rounds to the alliance of 63 and 1708. 1708 was having problems and could also not pass inspection. The Red Barons and MOE, furiously worked to help this second year team following alliance selections to hopefully get them running. Regretfully, they couldn't so they requested a substitution. Even while running eliminations, members of both teams continued to work with 1708, right before the awards Ceremony some of the students came over to me from the alliance with smiles on the face and said we did it 1708s up and running and ready for their next competition. I'd also like to give a shout out to Mike Dischner of 1708, for receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award. I met him last year when his team was a rookie and cannot believe the progress he and his team has made. As a second year team, they are already mentoring rookie teams and spreading the word of FIRST. Mike thank you for your hard work, keep it up!

The Miracle Workerz are an amazing team. They truly deserved the WFA and Chairman's Award. Guys I'm rooting for you at the Championship! They routinely offered parts, assistance, expertise, and tools to countless teams. When my team had a bent axle and could not compete in one of the Qualifying Matches with them they said that's alright we understand it happens, and following the match one of the mentors came over to our pit to check up and see if he could lend a hand. During the eliminations I thought of them as the universal pit crew. It did not matter what alliance it was if there was anything they could lend or do for a team they did it. 1743 is still very appreciative for what you did for them.

I'm sure there were countless other stories that were not told, and I might post more as I think of them. But thank you again to those here on CD that have taken the time to acknowledge my team. We're very appreciative. I'll pass the word along to my students, not all of them have regular computer access. Best of luck to all of the teams. I hope to hear more stories of GP from your teams at the other regionals and at the Championship!

Best,
Wayne

Wayne,
I have never used this form of communication and I hope you get this. Something about teaching an old dog new tricks.

I was absolutely floored with this whole weekend. You and your team showed what I hope we can be some day and what happened with 365 and 63 has just blown me away. I am not one who shows much outward emotion but the things that God has blessed me to experience in FIRST have put me on the emotional roller coaster multiple times. I am truly blessed to have made so many new friends, and you are my friends. Leigh, John and you have awesome teams and I have yards to go before I can measure up, but we will continue to grow and improve. I have the help of Jess Jankowich and I picked up Maria from 63 while she is studying at PITT.

Thanks for helping to make Pittsburgh a big success, I know that we will continue to improve and shoot for higher purposes. Our mentee Team (1743) did pretty good also, keep an eye on them in Atlanta, Sarah is a gem.

Thanks also for all your kind word about the team and me, I am humbled and graciously accept the praise.

Keep in touch,
Mike

Re: 2Train Robotics = Class Act

Here we go for another round of thanks:

I'd like to thank 1038 and 1743 for being amazing alliance partners who stuck to strategy and played amazingly well.

Yes Paul was my former drive coach and mentor. Paul thanks for the congrats. I've told you before that I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today if it weren't for you. Your words mean a lot to me. If all goes well, maybe we'll pick you guys again at the Championship Actually, I'd be quite humbled to work with the TCs again in any capacity. Videos show that you guys have designed once again a pretty sick machine and are likely going to be rock stars at the competitions once again. Good luck at Detroit this week. See you in ATL.

Mike of 1708 you are the man. Glad that you're on CD. I think it was fitting that we won the Championship with you last year and the Championship with your mentee this year. I'll keep an eye on 1743 as you asked. Jess and Maria are sweethearts and will sure help mentor your team to new heights. Keep working hard. I'll be keeping an eye out to see what great things 1708 accomplishes in the years to come.

To Jeremiah, Chrispy, Andy and the rest of the crew of the Full Metal Jackets. I think you guys are one of the most incredible groups of students (and mentors) that I have ever met. You give me too much credit. You guys are my heroes. Persistence under tough situations to a good machine, you held your heads high and smiles on your face no matter what happened, put on a good show, and just made the event good ol' fashioned fun for all of us. Thanks this was greatly needed considering how long elims dragged out. You will always have friends out here in NY. To Brandy and Courtney, my stylists. I cannot thank the two of you lovely ladies enough for jumping right in and giving me the right look. And I think after more than 2 dozen washes the wax is finally coming out of my hair!!!!

Steph, congratulations to you and the rest of 1629. You had an amazing machine and put up a really good fight. I'm very impressed by your coaching and leadership skills as a sophomore. Hope you keep up the good work. If there's any advice that I can offer you please feel free to ask.

If I missed anyone I do apologize and please do not hesitate to yell at me. This has been one of the most phenomenal experiences for my team and I.
-wayne
