Re: New Game Idea: ROBOT HOCKEY!!

What kind of obstacles would there be? It seems to me that the lack of anything on the floor (low bar, steps, bridge, etc.) for this year or last year makes me suspect that FIRST is going to make navigating the field just a little treacherous. If you think about it, one if the reasons Triple Play was a simpler challenge was because there was nothing that the robot could get hung up on. There must be some way you could intergrate obstacles into thhe hockey field. Hmmmm...

Maybe 24" wide x 8" tall squares, circles, and triangles (with cordura-over-pool-noodle bumpers) randomly scattered around the floor to deflect direct shots on goal, similar to what you'd see inside a pinball machine.

I believe in intuition and inspiration. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. It is, strictly speaking, a real factor in scientific research.

Re: New Game Idea: ROBOT HOCKEY!!

HOCKEY WOULD BE AWSOME!!! ahaha. Just im think icing calls would cause games to be boring. ahaha. jk

Curling is basically shuffle board on ice. The brooms are used to speed and curve the stone (the coffe pot thing that is used like a disc in suffleboard).

But, hockey would be so cool, just i can see two robots throwing the gloves down and duking one out. ahhaha. The main song playing on the DJ station would be techno music like at hockey games. ahaha. Far from FIRST i think, but an awsome idea.

For those of you who took the old SAT: shuffleboard is to curling as tic-tac-toe is to chess.

Sheesh.

Re: New Game Idea: ROBOT HOCKEY!!

Its been a fairly guarded secret so far, but I'll drop a few hints. The robot club here at MSOE has been working on an "ice bot" for a few months now. We've finally acquired all the parts we need, except for some victors and/or spikes (I think) and its growing closer and closer to a reality. I won't give you any hints on the drive system yet, but you'll love it (if it works).

The bot is a prototype for a college level (at least) competition in the Milwaukee area (and whoever wants to come) using...yep - you guessed it...ice. One small step at a time...

We toyed with the idea of next year's Milwaukee VEX League being on the ice, but there are some logistics we haven't figured out yet. The dream is not dead though... MSOE's new Kern Center ice arena is perfect for this sort of thing...

I think there was something to get hung up on; the goal. We actually had our robot shoved inside of the goal one match and we couldn't get back out again.

There would need to be some kind of field elements out there though; the simple robotic hockey concept doesn't even have ramps against the sides. That would be interesting with large movable bumpers, and teams could as a strategy stuff them in front of their own goal to prevent their opponents from scoring.

I want to see the ice bot!

Re: New Game Idea: ROBOT HOCKEY!!

sounds like a lot of fun to me! i really like the part about running on a different surface, mostly for the drivetrain, but also because it requires much more drive skill. the robots would slide like KWAZY! it would be awesome to watch. frustrating for drivers, though

Re: New Game Idea: ROBOT HOCKEY!!

indeed show some pics of the ice bot!!!

obstacles.. i think some random chunks of carpet (maybe in the shape of a small bump) , so if you slide into them you might stop / slowdown.. .
