Re: Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

Just to add one that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Team 703. They collected balls really well but mostly they could get on top of the ramp and just pour them out. It was like dumping through the air into the goal. Impressed me quite a bit and it certainly scared their opponents.

Good range, good accuracy, great shooter
322
This is a low goal scoring robot, but they were really fast and could pick up 10+ balls and dump them in the low goal while the top shooters were still filling up and getting into position.
1501
another good shooter that really did some damage at boilermaker
74
When they unloaded the speed with which they shot was awesome, they were pretty accurate most of the time as well which made them all the more intimidating
These are all great teams. So are 1272 Tyrannikal Mechanikal and 107 R.O.B.O.T.I.C.S. 1272 was a great partner at Boilermaker and if they were still around for our second pick at West Michigan, we would have picked them. 107 was good at shooting from the ramp and about mid court. They could easily score all there balls from the ramp, unless you got up there and moved them. It was amazing to see them come with balls and start firing from mid court, you think that the ramp is the only place for them to score, and your wrong.

The Triplets have lost matches.
1114 and 1503 stared down the barrel of elimination twice yesterday!
And 254 lost a match in the finals.

Shaun,

Off the top of my head here are some records which stand out,

111: 19-3-2 in qualifying, 31-4-2 overall.
254: 17-3-1 in qualifying, 29-5-1 overall.
469: 20-0 in qualifying, 30-2 overall with both losses to 1114 & 1503 in the GLR finals.
1114: 28-2 in qualifying, 46-5 overall.
1503: 25-5 in qualifying, 43-8 overall.

So, there are some impressive records out there, but nothing as dominant as what Team 25 accomplished this year. The last time a team went undefeated in a regional season, would be Team 69 in 2004, although they had two ties. Basically, we're talking about one of the most impressive regional seasons ever.

So the scariest possible alliance would be one of the triplets (especially 1114) getting hooked up with 25.
There would be no hope.

These next teams are just below the ones above, but you still need defend them. 27 Team RUSH was good at West Michigan, so were 33 Killer Bees and team 85 BOB or Built On Brains.
The Martians did a lot better than I expected. I guess I didn't expect them to build a good shooter bot - I've only been on the team for one year, and it seemed like last year they did more defending than scoring. The Triplets also did great once they got on the platform it seemed - they made every shot if you didn't knock them around a bit.

We (Team 33) have been having a bit of trouble with different things on Buzz 11 (current bot) but it did pretty good at Grand Valley as far as things breaking and stuff. We didn't rank high but I think that's mostly because we got ganged up on and often got stuck with some not-so-good teams in the qualifying rounds (one didn't even have wheels ).

One of the ones I liked from Grand Valley was that real small, fast one - I forgot what team it was already but even though they only got one-pointers, they did it REAL fast, and they were able to get 10 points guaranteed right off the bat. BOB did really good too, like you said.

I think you're referring to 322. Our design was insanely simple, but incredibly effective and robust. Most people don't appreciate just how many points a 1-pt bot can score. We easily score our 10 points in auto and then 20+ in regular play. Though there are a few shooters out there that regularly score 30+ points per game (Triplets, 469, 85, 27, 494, 70, 451 just to name a few I've seen personally), a quick and efficient 1-pt robot can "quietly" score just as many points because they are rarely defended as much as a shooter... 1-pt scorers can also have the advantage of a lower center of gravity and be great defensive players inaddition to their offensive abilities . I think a good shooter this year is a thing of beauty, but it's nice to finally see some love for the little guys.

BTW- West Michigan was great! As usual, the competition was awesome. Most importantly, I just enjoy the mutual respect I see between all the teams- veterans and rookies alike. As a mentor, it definitely reminds me of why I do this year after year.

Kelly

Re: Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

I was team 418’s (LASA) driver at the Lone Star Regional Competition. We were allied with 231 and 1421; as an alliance, we decided I would do my best to keep 118 from scoring. Their shooter was amazing. The only time I did not see them score at least 9 balls during autonomous was when our robot pushed theirs so much their camera could not find the light.
During all three finals matches, I refused to let them do what they wanted. It was only because of this that they did not score ball after ball.
Also, 231 were an excellent team to have in our alliance, they reliably scored for us throughout the day. I was too consumed in stopping 118 to see exactly how many they scored, but I know it was enough to come back after 118 scored 10 balls during autonomous in the second game of the finals.
Finally, I would like to thank 231 for their excellent shooting and 1421 for their reliable autonomous, awesome defense and reliable lower scoring.
In addition, 118, I am deeply sorry for tipping your robot over in the final game; it was simply too effective for me to leave alone.

Re: Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

I almost forgot 148, the Robowranglers. I personally didn't get to see them a whole lot, but I know I was impressed the one time we were allied with them. The only reason they didn't make it to the finals was because 118 knocked them out in the semi's, and there's no shame in that.

That was team 322. They were amazingly fast. One minute, wait make that 20 seconds, they were all over the field picking up balls then scoring. I could hardly believe there speed. The are good and if there available would make a good second pick. I would pick them first, but they don't fit with my strategy.
