Ok, so most of us gals have had someone try a corny pickup line on us, but i'm wondering how many have had stalkers? I had two stalkers on myspace...and my friend had a real stalker at the philly regionals (as in a guy that wouldn't leave her alone even though she has a boyfriend!)

we have a few "stalkers" on our team. (ahem, any girl from 1038 can verify this) all the girls have had at least one stalker, and a few of the guys have been subjects for the stalkers. it's kinda creepy, but a swift kick somewhere will work wonders.

Normal "I like you" actions or comments in a persistent way does not really strike me as stalking. You might want to talk a look at the Wikipedia article on stalking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalking. Someone might, in fact, have been stalking you and your teammates, but it seems far more likely to me to be normal "I like you and want you to pay attention to me" behavior. Just because you have to tell a guy "no" ten times, doesn't mean it's stalking. (Heck, there was this one girl I pursued with mixed luck for a year before she really got with the program. We have now been married 27 years...) I am not minimizing genuinely dangerous behavior -- just suggesting that we be careful to differentiate between normal attraction and creepy, psychologically defective stalking.

In a professional environment, however, it most certainly is sexual harassment. The rule of thumb as I've been told is that you're allowed one pass at someone, for better or for worse. If they turn you down, any further pursuit can be construed as harassment.

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

Oh geez, its that time of the year again, when us girls in robotics have to be hit on with cheesy robotics pick up lines.... : ]

the most awkward one that ive gotten so far this season was from someone in a Tiger mascot suit. I was going up the escalator near him and he was like, "Do you wanna pet the kitty? Im the only one!"

i walked away... very very quickly. lol

actually none of them ever ask the girl..or guy in certain cases..out. they just follow you and sometimes one might think they are determined to do more. they're (all guys by the way) just creepy and you have no idea what they'll do next. it's taking the "i like you" to extreme.

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

I had a private message on this from a mentor who reminded me of something that we should all heed:

1. Treat each other with respect. This includes understanding that "no" means "no."

2. Having a crush on someone is a normal part of adolescent (and, dare I say, adult life). Taking "no" for an answer is the correct, mature response.

3. The rules are different in a professional environment than in life outside work. Trust me on this. Nothing will brand you as a loser faster than "hitting on" people at work.

4. If your mother wouldn't approve of your behavior, you shouldn't do it.

Thank you to the mentor who suggested that my comment might be misunderstood. I was trying to say that just because someone says, "Do you want to come over to our pit and see my engineering drawings?," doesn't necessarily mean that you are being stalked.

Amusing observation: I once worked for a 30-person software company that only had a couple of single, unattached women working there. Both of them usually had several visits a day from confused asocial programmers who didn't even seem to know why they were walking out of their way to say hi. As an old married guy, I thought it was kind of cute. (No, none of them ever did anything weird. They just seemed to understand in a sort of confused programmer way that girls and boys are different.) (Note: this anecdote is a humorous overstatement. Some of my best friends are software engineers who are every bit as socially sophisticated as the average 14-year-old boy.)

the best pick up line by far is when a girl stands near you and you really want to meet her but you don't even say hi to her....

I know I know I am not a girl... but I am tempted to post this already... its been over an year.

About an year ago I had the WORST pickup line used on me by this girl...

After using this line she started talking to me.

"Hey, You were suppose to post about me and after me... NOT before me."

Folks, keep in mind this actually worked.
Lesson: It isn't the "line" that works, it's the conversation.
