Re: Old Robots?

Last I saw, Eric (2005) and Stealth Hedgehog (2003) were at the back of one of the Physics labs. We don't have any off-season events around here to my knowledge so we are restricted really to demos and using them for testing to try and give our Rookies some practice for Jan.

Eric is in good condition, used for programming practice during this years build season. Stealth Hedgehog has seen better days but is repairable, unless our electronics wizzes have repaired it without me knowing... Oh, and one of our other robots was taken by some of our old students and is in Southampton or Winchester I think...

Re: Old Robots?

we keep all of our robots it will be 11 this year. for the off season events we use our practice robot so we can modify it if we want after the season so the competition robot is put on a shelf that we built against the wall in our competition room. we use them for new ideas for the game we are building for and we also look at them for ideas for our OCCRA robots. OCCRA is Oakland County Competitive Robotics Competition which is 100% student built robots and no adult mentors can help. Plus i have only been here for 2 years but it is interesting to look back at what we started with and where we are now.

Re: Old Robots?

We recycle parts of our old robots for the new robots. One of them was disassembled to play around with in the beginning of this year and the others are missing parts. I believe that this year's robot is the only fully functioning robot(which could have changed) and that one is sitting somewhere in this school building.

Re: Old Robots?

We usually take apart the old robots to help new kids to get a feel of what building and such is like.

Last year we dismantled Robogeet [first year robot] and Belladonna [second year girl's robot] -- and we combined em to form -- BELLAJEET! It was mostly for show than anything else.

This year we dismantled Dark Knight [second year boy's robot] so the new grade 9 and 10 kids could get a feel for working with robots and such -- we didn't really put it all back together.

However -- we refuse to allow anyone to touch last year's robot -- The Grip -- thats our pride and joy [made us proud in ATL]--!

Re: Old Robots?

Unfortunatly, only the 2005's robot has been left intact. The rest of the bots are in a room called the "morgue" and are randomly pillaged for parts during the build season.

Re: Old Robots?

Like most other teams we strip our old robots down. Some parts we keep intact like the drive train to train next years programmers on during our R&D period. It is kinda sad tho to see all that work taken apart but it just mean u get to make a new better one...yay

Being a graduate, it is always sad to see those robots that you worked so hard to build be out of commission. I always feel like Uncle Rico where I keep saying to my self "Ohhhh, man I wish I could go back in time. I'd take state. " (nationals in this case).

Re: Old Robots?

We keep our robot around for teaching rookies and for demonstrations. We usually keep most of them around. we currently have two laying around. One I used this year in november to test code, I was the only programmer and a rookie! and it saved my life and lessened the learning curve for the six weeks.

Re: Old Robots?

675 has a CMUCam test platform called "Cambot" made of 80/20 and old parts.
675 has a KitBot chassis from '07 with electronics from last year + this year's pneumatics as a test platform for 4-speed pneumatic shifting transmissions.
675 has no other old robots. We've dismantled them. Gloria will probably be turned into a new Cam test platform.

Re: Old Robots?

Old Beachbot status:

1998 - You remember that warehouse scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark? It's there somewhere.
1999 - we still have a few pieces around
2000 - Same as 1999
2001 - used as a test bed for 2002 drive, now it is a backup robot cart and is mostly stripped
2002 - Needs new trannys, a couple of cylinders, and a brain
2003 - still runs but won't shift, trannys are worn out
2004 - Became 2005 practice bot, used this year for gripper development still runs but needs original software re-installed to work as designed
2005 - (Champ Robot) tends to get modified less than the rest, but was picking up tubes by 5pm on Kickoff day
2006 - Camera test platform

As you can see, early on we scrapped our robots. But more recently we have learned that having a fleet of robots with different capabilities can be real handy. For example, while 05 was physically similar to our final design it was strictly electric powered, but 04 had a pre-existing pnuematic system and a pivoting arm. So 04 was used to develop our arm and gripper, at least until our 07 practice bot came on-line.
