Re: J&J or BMS sponsored teams

While sponsorship is important, one of things I feel that is sometimes overlooked is how the sponsors participate and interact with their team. Some teams get technical help from their sponsors, while others just get a check.

For 1089, I am grateful that we have a corporate contact at BMS who actually knows what's going on in our team. He's an incredibly busy man, but he really has put heart set in our program. At the NJ regional, he actually had put his hands in and was working with the students on our robot! At nationals, when I called him from Atlanta to let him know how the BMS teams were doing, he said "So, did you fix that power drainage problem?" -- this man knew what our students were doing, and was genuinely interested in how our team (and the other BMS teams) were doing. It made me proud to know that we have corporate sponsors with genuine interest.

There's so much to say about a sponsor who gets involved and cares about your team over one who just signs a check.

I'm not trying to play the "my sponsor is better than yours" game, by ANY means, but I am just saying that I've come to appreciate that people who work in big business are STILL people who care -- not just about how their money is being spent, but how this program will help benefit the future.

Man, FIRST is amazing

I'm working on a list of Major Sponsors, I attached the file, feel free to email /pm (email is preferable) me back any changes/additions you think I should make. So far I hopefully have all the teams sponsored by, NASA, GM, Delphi, BMS, J&J, UTC, Ford, Chrysler, BAE, Siemens, Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, and Google, but I'd love to have more.

Remember to follow Mr. Woodie Flowers Jr.'s trend and treat your sponsor's like they should be treated

Re: Major Sponsors (was: J&J or BMS sponsored teams)

Yesterday, BMS held a "finale" for all of their NJ teams. They had some great speeches, food, award certificates, and a video montage of all of our teams that were in Atlanta. It gave us the opportunity to mingle and share experiences with the other teams (which we also met with at kickoff), and our students and mentors got to meet and talk with some professionals there.

As I spoke with Dr. Anders Hedberg yesterday, and even mentioned this thread on CD, and he stated that BMS's intent is to grow their team base, but only insomuch as they can find personnel willing to work with each new team. I find that a very sound philosophy.

Earlier that day, I spent about twenty minutes talking with David Carle, our contact. He was very upset that he couldn't make the event, as he was "really looking forward to it". He was very excited about how much we've done this year, and how much we've grown, and how pleased he was to be a part of the team. He also relayed a story of how we went to a BMS facility in CT who had pictures of Team 228 on the wall was talking with him about FIRST. How cool is that?

The point of my post? As my sig suggests, I'm PROUD to be a BMS team, and I'm PROUD of all of your sponsors who get involved with your teams and get excited about your progress. This is CLEARLY not unique to our team and sponsor, but something absolutely incredible.

When corporate America gets excited about FIRST, we have to be doing SOMETHING right!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL TEAMS AND SPONSORS FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2006 SEASON!

What I would be curious to know from the sponsors is the level of interaction and communication between the teams for a given sponsor or between the various sponors reps/contacts/mentors across the company.

I know at Lockheed Martin, each location handles it's first team separately (and that is better then a corporate mandate in my opinion... those tend to be bad for everyone). But we have started working over the last year or so at a grass roots level to get a network of Lockheed FIRST supporters so that we can better understand what the corporation does as a whole. And it also allows us to help folk at new locations who are starting teams.

What would be interesting interesting along with the raw number of teams would be a comparison between the number of teams and the companies gross sales, or some other measure that compares FIRST support to the relative size and business level. How about employees versus number of teams?

Re: Major Sponsors (was: J&J or BMS sponsored teams)

One sponsor that is emerging from the woodwork is Medtronic... Medtronic and Boston Scientific have partnered to help sponsor new MN teams very generously, as well as continuing to be one of our teams major sponsors. In addition, Medtronic has also hired someone to work with FIRST to spread the word of FIRST (starting to sound a tad cultish... ) in MN. Thanks in large part to Medtronic, we now have a MN kickoff event, and hopefully we will soon have a MN regional.

I agree with galewind... it's REALLY exciting to see corporate sponsors getting fired up about FIRST!
