Go to Post I've never encountered a motor as forgiving as a CIM - Stall them for 20 seconds, run them hot on a short turnaround, or call them mean names in between matches and they'll just keep doing their thing. - thefro526 [more]

IRI - Student Hosts and Volunteers

OPPORTUNITY 1
IUPUI (Indiana University - Purdue University - Indianapolis) and Rolls-Royce are sponsoring a Women In Engineering camp this summer, July 20 - 22. Part of the camp experience is going to be a "road trip" to the IRI to see some engineering in action!

We are recruiting students to be 'guides and hosts' for the young women (high school students) who will be visiting from the camp. We would like to have as many hosts as possible (there are 30 campers coming). Female volunteers will be given preference over males.

You will be needed from 10 AM - 1 PM on Friday. Your lunch will be provided.

If you are interested, please send an email with your name, email address, and team number to IRIVOL@indianafirst.org. Indicate you would like to be a WIE Host.

This can be a great way to spread FIRST to more students and more schools and share the experience from your perspective.

OPPORTUNITY 2
There are still needs for volunteers for the IRI in Field Reset and Queing. We could use a Pit Announcer. Check out the info at www.cyberblue234.com and send your interest to IRIVOL@indianafirst.org.

Re: IRI - Student Hosts and Volunteers

For those of you who don't have experience in touring, let me give you a pretty brief summary of the kinds of things that often happen for Robotics tours to "VIPs" or outsiders (based on experience at Boilermaker Regional).

You really don't have to be a genius to do this. The idea is that you give the people you are walking with (sometimes a tiny group, other times 8 or 9 people, it varies) a taste of what FIRST is, and especially how it has affected you. The reason that competitions like IRI & BMR do these tours instead of just showing visitors an informative video is to add the personal touch, the individual flavor and passion of the students who participate in the competition.

I promise it's fun...give it a try.

Re: IRI - Student Hosts and Volunteers

This sounds like something I'd love to do.
I just sent in my email saying that I am interested. I love talking about FIRST, and I have run several RoboCamps specifically for girls, AND I am a female majoring in mechanical engineering... so I think I could take this on.

Sounds like fun!

Re: IRI - Student Hosts and Volunteers

Hm... that sounds interesting. I might take a look into this after I make sure I'm going to IRI. I hope that so many girls volunteer for this, that I can't do it. Although I'd like to.
