On robot LCD display

Hi
I am thinking of developing an on board display for an FRC robot. It would be sort of a primitive GUI used mainly for advanced autonomous selection, but not limited to it (I am thinking it will probably use an LCD module). I would like to know how this could be done. Would a co processor be needed? if yes, would the vex or mini robot controller do the job (although if I remember right, the mini RC is not allowed as it is over 200$). If a co processor is needed, how would the communication between them be done? (my guess is programming port or multiple analog in/outs). Later on, if a co processor is needed or not, how would I proceed to program the text and menus? will C be enough or is a more advanced language like assembly needed? Would I be able to display graphics or will i be limited to text?

Right now i am less concerned about the wiring, but how I would interface the RC with a display or RC-co processor-display. The display will also have buttons on it for selecting certain options or programs. I am thinking it will be something like this (but a little bigger) or this . If I have a spare pocket pc LCD display, would i be able to use it or will i need one of the above LCD modules?

I know a system like this has been used by team 195 this year, but i didn't get a chance to see it or find any information about it. I would appreciate it if someone from 195 could explain how their system is set up.

I would greatly appreciate any answers I can get for these questions.

David
