A grinder is like a sub, but it's toasted and is usually larger.

In New Jersey we referred to them as "heros".

I have never understood why they call them "grinders" up here.
I have yet to successfully sharpen my lawnmower blade with a ham and cheese grinder or even mount a wire wheel to one!

I don't know about my pic fetching more than the stained glass window, but...I would gladly offer a fair trade between the pic, and a stained glass window though.. That thing was hawt!

Aye..
Further proof you can take the Jay out of New Jersey, but can't take the New Jersey out of Jay.

Re: pic: Team 237 Picnic

oh oh oh (sorry again for the offtopic)

According to the Bellacinos FAQ:
Quote:
What is a Grinder?
Modified on 2005-04-17

A grinder is a “made from scratch” Italian sandwich. Our grinders are made with combinations of freshly sliced meats, vegetables, and cheeses, baked to perfection in our ovens, and garnished with fresh lettuce and tomatoes.

According to the Bellacinos FAQ:
As I work at an Italian takeout/restaurant/catering/ice cream (which has nothing to do with anything) place which has grinders, I am an expert (lol).

This link has a picture of chez Dave putting a grinder in the oven. Basically, I describe sub v. grinder as yeast donut v. cake. Subs are more airy, more like a yeast donut with all the air bubbles etc. Grinders are more like bread or cake donuts, more grainy.

On topic, Elgin, that looks like a gigantic version of the "hamburgers" we used to make in Girl Scouts with Nilla Wafers and frosting!
