My point is, there are many rules that exist. And everyone has broken a rule at some point in their life. Even intentionally, and a lot of times it's not a big deal. Bringing a drink into a convention center to avoid paying outrageous prices is one of those rules that, in my opinion, isn't a very important one. In a robot competition, following rules to the T is obviously necessary, but that just isn't the case for every single other aspect of life.

And these guys weren't even attending the convention! The chance that they would actually buy something is slim to none. I think we might be a little stir crazy, build season is still a few months away. Let's chill out and not jump all over 1501 for doing this or even make a big deal out of it for that matter. We should be praising them for doing this demo, not bashing them.

Yes I have broken rules and no it was not right for me to do so. As I go through life I try to improve and grow. I try not to break rules. I surely don't publicize it for the world to see. As for if breaking some rules is OK I guess that I will let my poll see what others in FIRST think. I am sure that you breaking the no soda rule is more important to the vendors and arena than having 6 stupid Fisher Price motors on your robot. Perspective?

The situations are so unrelated that I don't think you can compare them and make a whole lot of sense. If I put myself in the shoes of the vendor, Pepsi still made money from them buying that 12 pack at a prior time. Less money, yes, but I think they'll survive. And the arena? I live in Indianapolis, I want the city to prosper as much as anyone here. But the city is doing fine, they're currently building a new convention center and stadium to host even more conventions and sporting events (Can you say Championship in Indianapolis? )

Either way, I'm tired of debating over bringing a pack of mountain dew into a convention center. My view on it is established and that's that.

Re: pic: Sneaky at Gen Con

Ok, let me just say this i haven't even got through all the posts yet. Derek the guy who invited us to Gen Con saw us with the case of mountain dew and the candy.... he did not care, he himself had a drink from steak and shake and a burger from McDonald's. Not to mention none of the Gen Con officials or security people or Event Team people said anything and they seen it to. The only thing we were worried about was the door person through one door because it is right next to the exhibit entrance...

Now as far as rules go there was no official rule saying that you could not bring in drinks or food nor were there any signs. Now some exhibit halls have specific rules against this but we were in the hallway not in the exhibit halls.

As far as the title goes would someone respond to a title called "mountain dew under robot" or "sneaky at Gen Con" .... the title was a point of making people look at it and say ha that is funny.

Now as far as breaking rules Derek said he liked having us there so well and we behaved so well they he wanted us to come next year. So if one of the head Gen Con officials seen all this and said we behaved great and didn't say anything about us doing something it would seem we didn't break any rules.

The only time any Gen Con official said anything was when a ball hit a lady in the head (which was not on purpose).

Also i could have never left the building and walked over to the mall (through the building) and got a case of mountain dew. Therefore it doesn't matter if i bought it here or there i could have got it in the building regardless just not in specific exhibit halls

I agree with Ryan and as i said earlier. Derek liked us so much and how we acted he invited us back and wants more to come. Possiably a competition.

I started off with $200 going to indy and i have $10 left.... seems like they made plenty of money off of me. Not to mention all the other students and mentors. Some even competed in some of the games. Derek even said "I seen some of you guys walking around its great to see you taking a part of Gen Con itself, because i don't want you guys to stay here all day"

Also there was a food cart behind us the first day they had a total of 30 customers the whole day 2 of them not from the robotics thing..... then they closed that because they did not have enough "public" business.

I don't even know why i am defending myself there was no rule broken.

You shouldn't have to be defending yourself and thats been one of my points all along. I'm glad you guys did this demo along with the other teams, it's definitely a great specific audience to do a demo for. And to think, all this controversy over something that wasn't even considered breaking a rule by one of the head officials of the convention itself

A competition at Gen Con oh my... send an invite to all Indiana teams, you could get some really intense stuff going on next year! How cool would it have been to have been near the other entrance? There were people swarming over on the other side.

I just mentioned that to Derek and he said it may be possible but we have to get together and meet and discuss things. So there is nothing official about a competition, but we will definitely be doing another Demo next year.

While i am making this post just let me re-state that the title of the picture was not to intend rule breaking, it was simply to attract attention and get a giggle out of people. I guess next time i do something funny it will have to be fully appropriate. However all this commotion over pop seems kind of dumb when i have seen other teams or people on teams do a lot worse things.

I wasn't trying to attack anyone, I was trying to gently point out that possibly infractions shouldn't be publicized and chewed over, sorry if I just poured more fuel on the flames.

Moving on, I'm quite excited about this demo, Gen Con looks like it was quite an interesting event. Can we get video of the demonstration?

No its all good, i think everyone has an understanding of exactly what happened now, and i think i can get a hold of a video and upload it to our teams server at somepoint, it may be a bit. Chris from 393 has some videos maybe he could get one up to, because as of right now all i have is pictures.

Of all the PICTURES Wayne took at GenCon and you upload this??? I need to teach you some editoral skills. You should have uploaded the pictures of Grant, Tory or Kari from Mythbusters...Or what about Richard Hatch or Gigi Edgley??? Or what about the TONS of people in full custume? The board games? The gillion SEAWAYS running around? The awesome picture of FOUR TEAM robots cramed into our trailer? Man....you gotta stick those in our Gallery so everyone on CD can see them. It's amazing what was going on at Gencon!

EDIT: Spelling fix from Karl to Kari, and Tori to Tory.
