Scholarships

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had tips on where and how to find scholarships for college. I've recently started looking, and I can't seem to find much.

And for that matter, does anyone know when the FIRST scholarships for this year will be published?

Thanks much,
/dan

Re: Scholarships

Fastwebs.com is a huge scholarship site, but for the same reason I think the scholarships that get posted get deluged by students, reducing your odds of winning. I also think a good percentage of them are kind of scammy.

I would really recommend looking at the FIRST scholarships and any scholarships in your local area. Your school's guidance department might post a list of scholarships available, or maybe you can find something from your state's department of education. My school had about 50 local scholarships that were awarded, so that is definitely worth checking out.

Make sure to get started as early as possible. It's easy to say "I'll do these after I'm done with application essays", but trust me, you won't be any more motivated then.

Re: Scholarships

I can name a lot of people (among my friends) who waited until the last minute and missed out on a lot of good scholarship opportunities. Greg has mentioned a lot of good resources, and seriously, more you work hard to wards scholarships, more you'll get.
Also I recommend contacting the school you're applying too. Most of the time there are foundations who give out scholarships to upcoming freshmens, and the information can be only found in the Financial Aid Office. Other than that, visit the head office of your County Education Department if possible (You can find a lot of local listings there too).

Its like building a robot. It's a pain, but it WORTH IT!

ps Apply to as many as possible. I, myself, applied to 20+ and got only 3.

Re: Scholarships

As mentioned above, once you have narrowed down your college search, definetley check out the school's financial aid office to see what scholarships are offered through the school.

Check with your high school's guidance office/counselors. They might have a list of local scholarships avaliable, my high school did.

Also check with your parents, many of my friend's have gotten scholarships through their parents workplaces.
