What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

what makes a FIRST team a "renowned" team? much like 233, 217, buzz, MOE, Chief Delphi (just to name a few) and others.. people always are afraid of going up agianst a team like them and many others.. or always praying they are on the same alliance (who knows if next year that might even still hold).. and lookin up to them as a team that is what a FIRST team should be

so what makes them so good? why are they so well known? what about other teams who have awesome records in the past or even now? or awesome attitude and cheers? well known traditions such as team 522 the Original Robo Wizards always with purple facial hair or regular hair, and 233 with the pink body paint?... there are teams out there that i believe should get the same praise, but why dont they? there are other mentors out there who are just as awesome.. i kno quite a few. so someone tell me..

is it the way the team acts? team name? cheers? attitude? robots? or a combination?

i have my own personal opinions about this subject, i would like to hear (well actually read) everyone elses.. and who should be a "renowned" team?

so... what does a team have to have... to be a "renowned" team?

Re: What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

A similar topic was raised here: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ht=elite+teams

That said, there are many paths to legend status in FIRST--on the field, off the field, Chairman's, ChiefDelphi, and other areas tend to be the most common--but most teams who most would consider to be in that sort of position today seem to have some combination of them. Even winning a Regional Chairman's or a Regional Championship won't necessarily do the job these days, given the increasing numbers of them that must be awarded as the number of regionals grow.

Re: What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

I believe it's in the team name. A memorable name like Wildstang, BEAST, Cheesy Poof, Think Pink, Thunder Chickens, ect ect. There are teams out there that I remember and then put together that with the accomplishments... that makes it much easier to remember a team.

Of course, I don't think a team needs to be memorable to be renowned, but it helps. I prefer to remember teams by their actions off of the field, but it's hard if I can't remember the name/number.

Re: What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

I have to go along with Bill. A team becomes memorable through a series of events. A unique team name, performance, robot design, assistance to other teams are all high on the list. Every team mentioned is also a daily practicing gracious professional. They are known by teams because they help others. (a lot of others) Whether they help make repairs, guide students, or have unique strategies, only doing one of the above things will not get you remembered. Once those things are in place, marketing takes over with shirt design, logos, cheering, etc. so that a person can identify a memorable moment with a particular team. It's hard to miss a great performer like the Thunder Chickens when they have the bright green shirts. Tecknokats carry their tradition with a distinctive blue and red uniform, robot, even avatars. The same goes for Chief Delphi, RoboDogs, Spam or the Xcats. It is not one thing but a list of accomplishments over many years, tied with an easily remembered team identifier.

Re: What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

It's exciting to see the newer teams lining all these ducks in a row, having worked with, listened to, and learned from the older renowned teams. It is a terrific process at a great time in FIRST.

Re: What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

Although there are different ways in which a team can become renowned within the FIRST community, all everything comes down to is recognition. If your team attends a competition, is your team number one known to all? If you had to blindly choose a Fantasy FIRST league before kickoff, who would you choose? (Assuming you only went by Champions, E.I., and Chairman's awards?)

What if there was a seperate league for just the other awards, such as Team Spirit, Imagery, Website. etc? Which team's would you choose based off of these awards? Which rookie or sophomore teams stand out in your memory? Or how about people? What team numbers can you remember based off of the people from that team?

What teams come to mind if you mention transmission, drivetrain, Lexan, PVC, arm/elevator, operator interface? Which teams come to mind if you mention amazing drive team or coaching?

What about the FIRST Vex Challenge or the FIRST LEGO League? A "renowned FIRST" team does not only mean FRC; FIRST also includes FVC and FLL. Which FVC teams stand out in your memory, for either their robot or for their spirit? How about FLL? Are there any FLL teams in your area that are always at the top of their game?

A renowned team would be any team which would consistently come to mind for any of these questions, year after year. A renowned team would be one which other teams come to for advice, help, and inspiration. A renowned team inspires rookies to say "I want to be like that team!".

Re: What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

Alot of it has to do with continued visability and success. Outside of the the frequent attendees of the VCU regional, most teams wouldn't give 388 or 510 a second glance, but they are amognst the strongest and most visable teams year in and year out at VCU, and thus have quite a reputation within the VirginiaFIRST community. The same can be said on a larger scale for teams like 71, 111, 233, 254, and many others. They are ALWAYS contenders at every event they attend, and frequently emerge with victories. Each has a large cheering section, unforgettable (in both appearance and ability) robots, and numerous other factors that allow them to become "renowned". All 4 of the teams I mentioned have also won 2 Regional Chairman's awards (111 and 254 have also won the Championship CA), 4+ regionals (12 in the case of 254), and 71 and 111 have won the Championship event (71 has 4 times). Even when these teams have "off-years" (which pretty much never happens) they can still push deep into the elimination round at almost any event. Not to mention 233 and 111 have very unique and distinctive team uniforms, that really stand out from the sea of black, blues, and reds.

Re: What can make a FIRST team a "renowned" FIRST team

Do you mean renowed in the FIRST community or the ChiefDelphi community?

In the FIRST community it's how well they build machines. How reliable they are as a alliance partner. How helpful they are as a pit mate, how graciously they carry themselves and manage to stand out in the ever growing crowd of FIRST.

In the ChiefDelphi sense it's the perfect storm of visible team members, strong robots (while the off field awards are nice you notice a good portion of the threads lean towards gushing over teams that succeed on the field) and an ability to stand out from the FIRST crowd.
