Unhappy Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

Here's a little background before I start.
Delphielite.com is a php based site. The index page is a template and the content is pulled to the page by PHP. Lately, i've been noticing alot of bandwith usage over the course of a month. This month so far we've used 1.5gb. Most of this was because we hadn't optimized the sites graphics but even by doing that i'm only cutting back a small portion. I found that the problem is that the site has to pull down each of those graphics everytime someone clicks on a link.

Now the question:
Is there any way that I can only pull down the new information and leave the rest of the site alone? It would work something like an iframe but instead of using a frame i want to use php. Let me know if I explained it well enough.

Re: Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

You could use AJAX to just get the content... pages would load faster that way too. When did the month start for your site? 1.5gb doesn't seem that bad if you're 28 days into the month. One site I was running did 1.2gb in a day :-/.

Re: Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

well you can try to enable a higher level of caching.. i dunno whats ur current cache setting for your server though. Last time i used to make my php return no-cache headers for all my pages and that kinda incurred alot of bandwidth lol.

Re: Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

1.5g isnt to high. It all depends on how many hits your getting. Obviuosly more hits means more data being transfered. Could it just be your getting more hits recently. Do you have an idea of what your trying to trim it down to?

Re: Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

1.5 Gb? And you are worried? Consider it a good thing if traffic goes up. I currently use about 50 GB a month for just my personal blog with a gallery of images.

Re: Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

I did think about using ajax. The only thing that I was worried about was the inability to bookmark pages on the site. There are ways to do that as well.

I do like increased traffic but it's too early to be getting the increase in traffic. I'll definetley look into it though.

I guess i'm trying to keep the bandwidth at 1.5gb, and with the site already reaching that right now, it scares me to think of what is would be once the season officially starts in january. Our site gets a steep incline in hits right about then.

Whats your BW cap (if any)? You may want to check the number of hits as well..

Yeah... are you hosting with a free or ultra-strict host or something?
My low-traffic site uses about 0.5 GB a day. That makes 15 GB a month, out of my 1 TB bandwidth limit. Really. Why worry? This is a hopeless effort. Maybe you could turn of gzip (if not already). Maybe you could automagically remove all white space from your code and compact it as much as possible. But seriously, I've downloaded more than 1.5 GB in a day.

Re: Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

I must agree. This is a hopeless battle. It makes me sick to see that the team wants more content on top of the old and don't really want to pay anymore. The host isn't strict at all. Its just the fact that bandwidth does cost.

Thumbs up Re: Trying to reduce bandwidth usage

You should have at least 20GB a month transfer even with lowest service plan. Call your provider and see what the monthly CAP is. You should get XX transfer and then X dollars for every GB after that. You guys have your own box so you should be way above 20GB a month. I PM'd you with info on a really good hosting company. They host the site for [H]ardOCP.

You guys are doing a great job with the site by the way its always fast and
has very good uptime compaired to other forums I frequent.
