According to wikipedia, "nickel" is a defense formation in American football.
Perhaps a hint that defense will be important this year?

Alright so i had my father look at the picture and this is his idea:

The diamond plate will need to be hit and "spun" causing either sumthing like dunk tank effect or thats how you score points....

Hey who knows because of how its cropped.

Slap yourselves in the face...hmm...
The Slap-o-matic was on the board game "hands down" aka best game ever!
Hands have 5 fingers, usually.
In that amazingly wonderful game you had to Slap or win when you saw a pair.
Take from my tired thoughts as you wish.

I was wondering about that, but its not always the case. Sometimes its 4, sometimes its 6. I think Dave's just messing with whats left of our brains again.

Re: 2007 Official FRC Game Hint / Email Blast

Someone mentioned that Joe DiMaggio's number was 5. He has the record for the most consecutive games with one base hit or more (56). Noting what appears to be a goal from '05 in the lower right, and knowing the hint from then and the game name had to do with baseball (not to mention the "diamond" "plate"--both baseball terms), I'd guess that the game will be similar to a baseball game in at least one element.

My latest guess: game piece softballs, some form of base somewhere, played something like '05.

I'm probably way off. Dave and the GDC pulled a good one. I bet a riddle would have been too easy for us to figure out, so a simple game? My head is hurting badly...

Edit: I meant most consecutive. (Sorry, mikemax.) Although could acutally be that way...
Edit2: Indysam was the one who caught Joe DiMaggio's number--back in post 38.

Also last year at nationals the possiblity of color changing lights was addressed. Here is another thread discussing that topic.

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=46942

Now to my idea. The CMUCam would make a return. The basis of the game would be somewhat like the Milwaukee VEX challenge King of the Rings. http://www.wirobotics.org/vex/2006/index.html Here is a rule manual for those that do not know what the game is all about.

As already mentions the game piece would be kid-sized pool tubes, like life preservers. This is because the clue is a zoomed in picture.

Around the field would be poles, on which the tubes are stacked on, kind of like 2005's Triple Play. This is where the camera comes into play. Near each pole is a color changing light. They change randomly between a limited amount of colors. Then the Ishihara Test for Color Blindness comes into play. Only poles with lights of a certain color can be scored. Maybe for one round red lighted poles count.

The diamonded plated circle functions like the circle in King of the Rings This is the king of the hill portion of the game. Which ever robot gets on the platform at the end of the match gets points.

The only things that I have not accounted for are
1)the number five on the diamond plated circle in the clue
2)the lights change color but there is no real targeting involved. This though could be a built in element so rookie teams can try to place rings on plates while still giving experienced teams the challenge of using the camera to perfect dropping of tubes.

So what does everyone think?

good find on the joe dimaggio stuff...maybe your on to something....maybe its not about baseball but like you said in the post above me...joe dimaggio has the record for THE LONGEST GAMES....maybe the clue is supposed to say that the game is gunna be longer then normal.
or considering it does have refrences to the '05 game...maybe it has refrences to the other games as well...maybe it will be a mix of all of them! i dont know...my head hurts alot

Re: 2007 Official FRC Game Hint / Email Blast

Could the round diamond plate simply be part of the field. Perhaps part of some sort of objective in the middle? Cound 5 represent the number of teams or goals or some sort of important element of the game?

Re: 2007 Official FRC Game Hint / Email Blast

I thought game hints were supposed to be vauge/confusing sentences, has FIRST decided to change from text to graphic?

Of course when you think about it this hint is infinitley easier for them to relate to the game, it could literaly be anything.

This also makes it virtually impossible to guess anything. Unless they give us something more specific I think we should all sit back and save our brains for when we'll need them most; build season.

The five of diamonds is widely believed to be the fifth card of Wild Bill Hickock's "Dead Man's Hand" of Aces and Eights.

Lightbulb Re: 2007 Official FRC Game Hint / Email Blast

Ok, so I didn't read through every single post on here, so I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but a friend of mine asked where the poem was while we were discussing this, so in the next 4 minutes and 25 seconds, i created this shakespearean sonnet out of thin air, and now i present it to you as well.

"this game is strange; i do not understand
the purpose for this hint its meaning so bizzare.
So strange no team will have the upper hand
because this clue out there is just so far

the number five on this strange metal plate
placed on a background of the color blue
now things like this i really truly hate
because i can't discern a thing; no clue.

now what the heck could this whole puzzle mean
for surely FIRST would not just put this out
without an answer that they would have seen
for there's an answer there; we'll ne'er find out.

but all i know of this is that we'll try
and once we see the cause, our minds will fry"
İRob Metzger, 2007

Hope you liked it.
