Use of servos in practice

In theory, it seems that servos should be highly useful for manipulators, especially if you want to limit the extent of rotation. But in actual practice, we haven't been able to make use of them. All of our manipulators are radically geared down (a typical ratio is 25:1), which means that the 120 degree rotation shrinks to less than 5 degrees, which isn't practical for much of anything.

Does anyone actually use the servos in the Vex kit, and if so, how? At the moment, we would gladly trade our servos for more motor modules.

Re: Use of servos in practice

Our robot uses a servo to move a lever that locks the robot in place after we raise up off the floor.

If you need to gear down for torque, you need a motor, as you found.

We made a robot that put softballs in a storage box and then used 2 servos to act like doors that opened and closed to hold the softballs in.

Re: Use of servos in practice

we used a servo this year, my idea as a mentor to help use it to lock in after we lift of the ground. Our lift on the bar is crazy, it reminds me of spiderman every time.
