Re: iPhone

This is simply an amazing convergence device, its beautiful how simple it works together. I would love carrying arround that much power in my pockt, need to see what Canadian company picks it up (probably rogers..). But I would put money down for that phone.

Built in WiFi? Sure, EDGE does suck, and I think they will/should upgrade that (remember, specs aren't final!).

With the iPod it was a different story, music vs. needing to get calls. I think Apple should have included a replaceable battery with this unit, but the whole "fraud Apple battery market" will probably pop up, people will half heartedly report it and blame it on Apple, etc. Rinse, repeat.

Same with battery. They should but they have to deal with bad products hurting their own.

See #1.

Overall, a solid, but expensive, product. Ah, it's like the Apple of yore, standing ovations at a keynote, big new shinny products, which are priced outside your reach, and that 1st gen goodness.

I will not buy a 1st gen iPhone. Never ever ever. I WILL get an iPhone (dad, can we switch to Cingular?) sooner or later when my contract expires/price drops. This is like the first iPod, they carve out a standing as a great product, then lower the price.

I do have some frustrations though.....

-3rd party apps? Can you install those or will you be locked into only what Apple offers?
-Spread to other providers? I've heard Cingular has a 6 month contract (to last them through the first christmass season with the iPhone) with the phone.
-Price. Wow. I think it's partially done to prevent iPod sales decreases and to repay the 2.5 years of development. Get it $100 lower then you're talking, and get more of an iPod presence in there (aka, more than 8gigs of memory)

Overall, I'm excited and have major gear lust.

Ok, I'll amend my question.

No mobile highspeed internets?

As for "fraud Apple battery market", have you seen a problem with any other phone? You can buy brand name, or non brandname batterys for just about any electronic device that needs them. 5 hours talk time, with no option to cary a spare battery? Guess Apple isn't targeting power users.
No expandable memory because other products might hurt the iPhone? Then use a standard like SD (or SDHC to be sexy). Not including features because someone else might make a product that might damage what you are selling is ridiculous.

Re: iPhone

I think my contract with Verizon runs up about a year after the iPhone is slated to be released. I don't like Verizon because they are still using CDMA phones, which makes it much harder to switch between phones on a whim.

What worries me most about the iPhone is not the expense of the phone but the expense of the plan. An unlimited data plan is more expensive than it should be from most carriers, and they better not charge you $.10 per text message on top of that. If you're fronting $600 to get the phone in the first place, an additional $70/mo in cell service & data plan is really going to hurt.

And even though Jobs called this "the new iPod", it can't be the only new iPod they are going to come out with. I expect to see something that looks a lot like the iPhone except without wireless and cell service come out before the end of the calendar year. A multi-touch user interface and big-screen video playing are just too good to restrict to the smartphone market.

I don't think it will be limited strictly to mobile devices, either.

I wouldn't be surprised to see all computers working off of this multi touch technology in the future.

Re: iPhone

OK, I have to admit it, the iPhone does look pretty cool, but I really do not see the need for it.
---
cons...
I already have an iPod, so no need for the music.

Wireless most computers have wireless, if I am going to need it I will use my laptop.

Cingular, I have Cingular... aka worst service provider ever! Anyone who has talked to me on my phone has realized that it drops more of my calls than I can even count on a daily basis. I would suggest thinking twice before switching to it, the only plus is unlimited mobile to mobile to other cingular customers.

The price, I think we all know what that is about... free moto Razr, or $500 Apple... let me think.

pros...
You can watch TV shows, the more people that watch TV the happier I am when it comes time for job hunting!

4:3 and 16:9 nice touch, I like it alot

Thin, thin phones are nice

Apple Inc. Product, I love Apple products, my ipod, computers, and everything else that I have purchased are amazing, not to mention the friendly staff that you can go visit at the store when you mess things up.
---

Over all I am unsure, I really see no need to spend that kind of money on something that I already have, sure it will be nice to have it all in one place but my laptop travels everywhere with me as does my phone and ipod.

Re: iPhone

I really want one of these phones. I have Cingular now, and in this area Cingular is amazing. Too bad I just got a new contract. (Plus there is no way I would pay 500-600 bucks for a phone) I can't wait for the price to come down and for my 2-year contract to be up.

I'm no means appologizing for Apple, just trying to get into their heads here...

I do remember awhile ago that Moto and several other companies were looking into exploding cell phone batteries (no relation to Sony) that were 3rd party and crappy.
