Re: What do you do on your team?

This is my second year on the programming end of things although everyone on the team generally helps in the designing process. If I had anymore time to devote to FIRST i'm sure i would be involved in more aspects of the robot but i have classes to pass and atleast 4 hours a day for that pesky little thing called sleep.

Re: What do you do on your team?

I've done almost everything on that list at some point or another (I haven't been a mentor, obviously) at varying skill levels. Freshman year I did animation, myself and joshsmithers designed this years end effector, I've done some CAD here and there, I program on occasion, I did a good deal of the wiring last year, I've been safety captain (the "other"), did a lot of the drivetrain last year, I'm not quite sure what "documentation" is but based on my best guess, I've done that too, and I have done some website work. I find diversifying is very handy for communicating between subteams and such, especially build team to programming team, and drive team to programming team.

Re: What do you do on your team?

I just mentor the team in the areas of the Chassis/drivetrain build, wiring, and whatever the students need help with. Also when students can't find any work to do I try to get them going on something. This year at regionals I may be coaching the driveteam or just walking around with camcorder taking video of the robot.

I know things are going good when I get to sit back and watch them work

Re: What do you do on your team?

me and another teamate are incharge of building the field( it takes two people to organize everyone since the field is so dang complicated this year)
well anyway i cut the wood and pvc needed to make the rack, since there are only a handfull of people allowed to use those machines.

im also into programing (just enough to know what is possible when we come up with ideas or modifications for the robot)

I am into drivetrain( one of the few people on the team that can figure out gear ratios and calculate ft/s and such)

I am also into design( i come up with crazy robot designs and game strategies that everyone laughs at, including me)

as you can see im into my fair share of things i would like to get into electronics but it would be a little much as of right now.

Re: What do you do on your team?

I'll admit, I'm a little disappointed that this poll focuses mostly on the ROBOT or on the COMPUTER. There are SO many other roles on a FIRST team.

For example, every year I help out with the awards (which I guess is considered "documentation" by this poll), but there's also Scouting and Spirit which are essential for any team. I also work with the Website kids to make sure we have a reliable up-to-date website. Then there's the Events Planning/Fundraising committee and the Records and Business Committee. Again, I guess the latter could go with documentation, but it's so much more than that. A budget and a business plan are very elaborate and deserve their own respect. And the fundraising committee on our team probably works the hardest, having to re-arrange schedules and squeeze dates into inopportune times.

So, I know, as a mentor this makes me a NEM, but there's more to it than that. I love working with the manipulator (we had a lot of fun with various prototypes this year), and I love watching what the kids can do and teach me. This year, I've finally sat down with my dad and learned more about the electronics of the robot. In fact, we spent about 2 hours trying to place them on a piece of plywood so they wouldn't interfere with our gearbox motors or arm manipulator motors.

Today, however, my goal is to get the kids to sit down and finish the outline for their Chairman's submission and design a presentation board for our high school's 8th grade orientation next week. =) Every day brings something new!

hmm i was thinking that exact thing.

My role on our team is the board member/head of what our team calls Team Identity. I deal with communications type things, award submissions, websites, and (my favorite!) designing shirts, hoodies, and give aways.

Being a board member gives me a leadership role, and i meet with the board members of machining, electrical, financial, captain, etc once a week and discuss what we should plan for the team.

in addition to being in charge of those aspects, i am also the only female machinist on our team.

Re: What do you do on your team?

Is there no option for "ALL OF THE ABOVE" with only 8 people on the team, all of us programmers, and only me with access / skill to work in the machine shop and no tools (except for whats in the machine shop) i end up doing allmost everything.

6-8 hours a day takes a toll on you!

Thumbs up Re: What do you do on your team?

Mostly unskilled labor, lol.
Right now I'm helping build the arm, and will probably help more with the drive train later...Done a little bit of machining and milling, I think I'll do more of that when I get the hang of AutoCAD software...We have lots of new people(including myself) so we have people just going around and helping with random things..
But yeah..grunt labor FTW!

Re: What do you do on your team?

I have to agree with BAndchick.

the kids on my sub team do all sorts of things that have nothing to do with the robot. we make all the travel arrangements, feed the crew or arrange to have restaurants feed them, hand out sponsor packets, set up community service and demos, write to legislators, send out press releases, write awards, design t-shirts, choose give a ways, make buttons, make pigs on sticks and plant them in yards (ya gotta see this fundraiser) plan events and update our sponsors.

These kids are also learning strategy, scouting and rules.

But most of the kids on our team do at least touch the robot even if they just rivet something.

Re: What do you do on your team?

A variety of things, I guess. I work on main design of chassis, as well as transmission and manipulator designs. Everything mechanical is my specialty and I love tools, but I also know how to work basic electronics so ocassionally I'll help there, too.

Re: What do you do on your team?

Mainly I take of the electronics. I haven't really done programming this year because I pretty just leave it to our new programmer while I work with all the prototyping groups. I help research and in a way manage(team updates, deadlines, etc.). Last year I was a driver but I'm not sure if I will be again this year. It'd be cool though because of the energy I get from being a driver, but we'll see as the season goes on.

way too much....

I'm doing mostly design and CAD now, but By the end I will have designed, fabbed, worked on controls, programming, electrical, assembly and team captain on top of that..... I might sleep one of these days....
