Linear Control

I was wondering if anybody could give me a good source for a linear potentiometer. I am planning on controlling a pivot point on our robot by using some sort of device that measures linear motion. It doesn't necessarily have to be a linear potentiometer. I know I saw some teams last year with a lever-type device on their control board that measured linear movement to control shooter speed or something... Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to buy something like this?
Thanks a lot.
